Wanna Watch FOTR & Chat with War in the North Team?

Tina Stevenson, Community Manager for Warinthenorth.com dropped me a line to let me know about this cool event the dev team has cooked up for you guys.

Tina writes: “We’re have a big part of our team sit down from 2-6 PDT today to watch the ‘Fellowship of the Ring: extended edition’ all together. Luckily, being a game studio means we all have tvs, computers, and dvd players right at our desk. We’ll be chatting along on Facebook with a heavy bent of just fans being fans together.

The main reason we set this up is because the theatrical re-release didn’t come to our part of town, so not many of us got to go… I know it is that way for International fans, and a lot of other folks as well.”

Be sure to head on over to their Facebook page for the details…happy viewing!

TORN TV: LOTR Blu Ray DVD Review

On this special edition of J.W. Braun’s bookshelf, J.W. looks at every Lord of the Rings DVD and Blu-ray set, including the collection hitting store shelves later this month! [Michael, this is a special video that's meant to be shared with fans sometime between now and next week - it should be about 14 minutes long. And then I'll take a mini vacation in July before returning with another "bookshelf" installment in August.]

Costa Botes on “Behind the Scenes of LOTR”

To coincide with the new release of LOTR on Blu-Ray, Jack of the Noldor Blog sat down with Costa Botes, whose rarely-seen, difficult-to-get documentary on the making of LOTR will be included on the Blu-Ray release. Botes is a Wellington director and long-time friend of Peter Jackson who PJ hired to document the making of LOTR – and his only brief was to capture it “warts and all”. Botes’ doco was eclipsed – you could even say suppressed – by the official New Line documentary, and so its inclusion in the Blu-Ray limited edition release is something special. Read More

Review: ‘Music of LOTR films’ best of tie-in books

“The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films,” by Doug Adams, Carpetier, $59.95

It speaks to the longevity of the “Lord of the Rings,” films that ten years later, movie tie-in books are still being released. It speaks to the power of Howard Shore’s soundtrack and author Doug Adams presentation that “The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films,” is the best of LOTR movie-related book and worth the wait.

In fact, if you are still hanging on to some of your post-Christmas or other holiday gift money, this comprehensive account of Shore’s scores are your answer on how to spend. This volume is a must-own for fans of Peter Jackson’s trio of films adapting the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and film score fans.

Tolkien deserves more than a passing mention here because it is clear from Adams’ work that the written word played an important part in Shore’s process. Far beyond scoring a movie, the composer delved into Middle-earth’s history and cultures, creatures and characters in order to best service the film. The book helps elucidate the fact that Shore’s 10-plus hours of music were done with Tolkien in mind as much as Jackson and that Shore’s work stands alone as a musical interpretation of a work of fiction as well as one aspect of the films.
