TORn logoBeginning last Saturday and running through to September 4, TheOneRing.net is hosting a Pledge Drive (see the banner at the top) as well as a bunch of auctions for some really cool memorabilia and collectibles.

The day-to-day operation of the website, and the events we host, require a lot more resources than when we first started nearly 15 years ago. We sometimes find it hard to ask our readers for the help we need to keep running, so we began discussing what it is that makes TheOneRing.net worth helping out. It started out as a search for the Top Ten Moments of TORn, but the list got so long because each staff member had their own idea of important moments in TORn history. Here, instead, is something more encompassing: Ten Ways TORn helps serve Tolkien and Lord of the Rings fandom (listed in no specific order).

And, if you enjoy what we do, consider a donation (no amount too small, because every bit does help!) to keep us running!

If you can’t, that’s fine as well — keep reading, commenting and contributing. Because TORn is as much you as it is us!

If you’ve ever sent in an article, submitted a photo or report, posted on our messageboards, visited our chat, or commented on our twitter, facebook or g+, you’re the reason TheOneRing.net is among the largest and most-respected pillars of the Tolkien community on the web.

If you have a Tolkien/Middle-earth inspired poem you’d like to share, then send it to poetry@theonering.net. One poem per person may be submitted each month. “Victory after all, I suppose! Well, it seems a very gloomy business.” The Hobbit chapter 18: The Return Journey.

This weekend, TORn’s Hall of Fire returns from the Christmas/New Year break with the penultimate chapter of our Hobbit read-through.

The Battle of the Five Armies is over. All that remains to be tallied is the cost. We’ll explore the fate of the company: do each get what they deserve? Does Thorin truly repent his harsh words at Erebor’s gates? And is Bilbo truly changed by his deeds and adventures? Is he a hero? A survivor? Or something else?

Join us tomorrow, Saturday January 7 at 5pm EST (New York time) when we’ll examine all these questions and more as we discuss The Hobbit chapter 18: The Return Journey! Continue reading “Hall of Fire chats return tomorrow!”

So, all that exciting and thought-provoking news we’ve had over the last week and a bit? We’re about to get down and start pulling it all to pieces in The Hall of Fire right now! So join us on our chat server as we do I semi-regular Hobbit movie rumour round-up!

We’re done! Thanks to everyone who came along!

Without a doubt, it’s been a huge week and a bit for Hobbit movie news. So this weekend (meaning tomorrow!), we’re going to do a special movie rumour round-up in The Hall of Fire.

We’ve just had Peter Jackson’s latest production diary exhorting us about the wild beauties of the 3D technology he’s using this time round.

We’ve had report one and report two from “Hobbiton” from Quint at AICN. Luke Evans talking about Bard the Bowman. Benedict Cumberbatch on playing Smaug. And rumours of a new set location in Wharepapa on the North Island.

And, of course, we’ve had the massive stir that our South Island mystery set pictures and video (now, sadly, removed) reports caused.

ALL THESE LINKS ABOVE HAVE SOME LEVEL OF SPOILERS

So join us tomorrow (Saturday November 5 at 6pm EDT) in the Hall of Fire on our own chat server when we’ll pull apart all these things and much, and talk movie rumours and news!

Nine Rings he gave to Mortal Men, proud and great, and so ensnared them. Long ago they fell under the dominion of the One, and they became Ringwraiths, shadows under his great Shadow, his most terrible servants.

Middle Earth abounds in character quaint and creepy; Gollum, Shelob, trolls and orcs, but arguably none inspire quite the same shivers and chills as the Nazgul.

Everyone assumes Ringwraiths were bad from the word “go” (or “Ring”, as the case may be). Why is there little mention of their sad tales, or of their history? A trail of dropped remarks and an ounce of common sense will help us discover something which has long been shrouded in mists — the story of the Nazgul, and how they entered into bondage to the Dark One. Continue reading “Hall of Fire chat tomorrow. Nazgul: willing obedience or forced servitude?”

So, we’re about to begin our exploration of chapter 14 of The Hobbit in Hall of Fire. Come along, bring your thoughts and join the discussion!

We’re done — thanks to everyone who joined in!
