Over at Elendilion.pl, the folks of Gwaith-i-Phethdain, (which means The Fellowship of the Word-smiths) have been doing some linguistic research based on the latest close-up pictures of Dwalin’s axes and Thorin Oakenshield’s Orcrist.
They report the runic (Angerthas Moria) inscriptions on Dwalin’s axes are Neo-Khuzdûl words that probably mean Grasper and Keeper. Apparently it’s a pun reference to the Bronte sisters’ pet dogs? The runes on Orcrist (scribed using Angerthas Daeron) translate as Tooth of Snake Orcrist.
Highlight the above to reveal some minor linguistic spoilers, then read on for some much bigger spy news! Continue reading “Spy news: Dwalin’s runes, Orcrist, Thranduil and wargs!”

As we reported earlier, today is The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit day at Comic-Con 2012 (aka #HobbitCon) and LEGO® was kind enough to send us this exclusive image of a brand new ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘ Playset! The set is called ‘An Unexpected Gathering’ and features Bag End with six mini-figures. As you can see in the image above, we have Bofur holding an axe, Bombur with a sausage and knife, Dwalin wielding a really large weapon and knife, Balin with chalice, Gandalf the Grey with walking staff, and Bilbo Baggins. As you can see the set is highly detailed with greenery, vegetables and much more. From the looks of the image we’ll have a nice inside component to play with as well. Stay tuned as we report more from Comic-Con 2012! [Live Coverage]

Comic-Con 2012 kicks off on Thursday and is expected to attract more than 125,000 people. Elijah Wood, reprising his Frodo Baggins for The Hobbit, will be back there this year — a decade after he accompanied director Peter Jackson to promote Fellowship of the Ring.
Wood told Reuters: “The scale of The Hobbit is larger, the anticipation is potentially greater, everything feels a little bit bigger. For so long, people didn’t think there would be a film, so the fact that there is finally, people have been anticipating this for a long time.”
Reuters says the studio will finally show extended film clips [my emphasis] at Comic-Con. Jackson is expected to turn out to meet fans and answer questions. Thanks to Ringer Elpidha for the heads-up on the article.

In December last year, I declared the first trailer a study in character.
Introducing and differentiating thirteen different dwarves to a wider audience most likely unfamiliar with the Hobbit and its ultra-beardy cast was critical for Peter Jackson. So Jackson used an entire trailer for the task.
But, because that trailer was so light on plot, we’ve been wondering ever since what degree of fidelity the story will possess and exactly how it might unfold.
The EW storybook addresses this at a single stroke. EW isn’t calling it a storybook, but that’s what Jackson has created. A gorgeously illustrated storybook that guides us through the key points of The Hobbit.
Read on for a spoiler-filled scene-by-scene review of The Hobbit — storytime with Peter Jackson! Continue reading “Storytime with Peter Jackson reassures and puzzles!”

Just when it seems the many Hobbit-related events at Comic-Con couldn’t get any better, Warner Brothers has added a Hobbit cast signing event! The signing will occur at the WB booth on Saturday from 11:15am to 12:00pm, with Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, and Andy Serkis listed as participating. You’ll then want to run (not walk) to the line to get into Hall H by 2:30 for the WB panel, to include a presentation on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with Peter Jackson and numerous cast on hand.
