Thorin Bus Shelter HDOS-1 Over the past week or so, various press screenings for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have been occurring all over the globe. Strictly speaking, everyone (including several TORn staffers) is supposed to be under embargo and NDA until December 8 at 12.01am PST, but in a clever (and seemingly successful!) work-around, TIME magazine has dropped the film in at the number 10 spot on its top films of the year.

So what did they have to say about the film? It’s a teeny bit spoilery, and actually quite complimentary. Continue reading “TIME declares The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug one of its top 10 films of the year”

bg_NiZme Do you want to go behind-the-scenes on the filming of The Desolation of Smaug? This is one of the traditional purposes of B-roll footage and, guess what? You can now see samples of that footage!

As with last year, the production (or Warner Bros.) has just released some of the B-Roll footage, so here are three clips for your viewing pleasure below. Now, be warned that since it follows the action of the film in a fairly linear pattern, it’s going to be quite revealing. If you’re waiting for the cinema to see how everything pans out, maybe it’s best to look elsewhere right now. We’re not kidding!

Also, there is dialogue, snippets of which we have transcribed, but it’s hard to know whether it’s the final dialogue that made the cut. From December 13, fans with a 3D printer who use the Windows 8 Ads-inApps, or who have an XBox 360 will be able to download a blueprint of The Key To Erebor. And that means they’ll be able to print their own, at home.

Pretty neat.

According to Microsoft’s Owen Sageness, the company partnered with Warner Bros. to make the whole thing happen — and was also pivotal in developing some of the nifty “deep dive” functionality you’ve undoubtedly already seen on the official website for The Hobbit movies. If you haven’t, go check it out — it’s worth it just for the creepy first-person-perspective trip through Dol Guldur! Continue reading “3D print your own key to Erebor from December 13!”
