The film panels for Comic-Con’s 6,500 seat Hall H are beginning to shape up nicely, which helps TheOneRing know where its staff will be spending its time. Warner Bros. has booked a three hour slot on Saturday for the largest hall, and “The Hobbit” will likely be featured and be assured TheOneRing.net team will be there to fully report. Perhaps the Tolkien fans need to ready their sleeping bags. Rumors place significant “Hobbit” actors at the event but we have no confirmations at this time.
TheOneRing.net also has been invited by Comic-Con to present a “Hobbit” panel as we have done for several years in a row. We also expect to feature some cool bonus content from Weta Workshop and chat about our Gandalf / Fandalf effort. Exact times will be announced very soon, perhaps as soon as tomorrow so stay tuned. TheOneRing.net is pleased to announce it is headed to an embedded set visit in Wellington, New Zealand during the filming of “The Hobbit: There And Back Again,”. The site and writer Larry D. Curtis accepted the invitation from Warner Bros. and Wingnut Films. The production is currently filming the second of the two films in studio, so all of the content from the visit will reach audiences in 2013, after this year’s release (December 14) of the first of the pair of films, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
The films are a two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” celebrating its 75th year of publication in 2012. Peter Jackson is directing the films after helming a three-part adaptation of Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” book that appeared in print 17 years after “The Hobbit.” Jackson scripted the films with his writing team of Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh with the addition of one-time-director Guillermo del Toro. Fans will remember the many agonizing delays before the film’s start that eventually forced del Toro to bow out.
Curtis, reporting from the film set, is part of TORn’s Senior Staff, a writer and photographer known to the TORn community at MrCere. He has contributed to TheOneRing.net for more than a decade in a variety of roles. In December he visited and toured New Zealand including an exclusive report from the Hobbiton Movie Set after being granted permission to publish impressions and photos from the site, rebuilt for “The Hobbit.” The location can be visited as a fully dressed film set accessible to by tour. The first block of filming on “The Hobbit,” included production from the site, set on a working livestock farm near Matamata, New Zealand. Welcome to the first
“Getting to know…” questions that need answering. It’s based on the old Getting to know you threads that I used to post on the message boards here, so those familiar with them will know that the questions can be a little crazy and the answers even crazier.
This month we’re asking questions of our favourite Ent, and Host of TORn Tuesday, Quickbeam.
Once again, thank you for agreeing to take part in all of this Quickbeam.
Me: Remembering, of course, that your beautiful kitty passed on just before you left for “Where the Stars are Strange“. Do you have any cats or other pets?
Quickbeam: Ah yes, that was a blow. I remember very clearly how I wanted to just “close up shop” when my little feline friend died. The thought of pleasurable vacationing in New Zealand seemed out of bounds, but obviously I went. Perhaps that is a normal response for anyone who has taken guardianship of an animal… those are the bonds of love that are peculiarly the strongest. The idea then came to me of how I might be sharing my unique trip to Middle-earth with the spirit of my lost friend. Somehow it was therapeutic and indulgent at the same time.

Guillermo del Toro was born October 9, in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico. He dreamed of being a filmmaker and went on to create a formidable catalog of movies that includes Cronos (1993), The Devil’s Backbone(2001), two Hellboy films (2004 and 2008) and Pan’s Labyrinth (2006). He is a co-writer of the two forthcoming films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. He also became part of TheOneRing.net community so we wish our friend and the talented director, producer, writer a happy birthday and many happy returns!
