TheOneRing.net were invited to tour the Gentle Giant Studios just before Comic-Con to get an exclusive sneak peak of their HOBBIT line of mini-busts. This report will show you a few images of completed busts, and a few images of ‘works in progress’ so that you can learn what goes into making these delightful collectibles.
It was an invitation met with a resounding “yes!” by TORn staffers Garfeimao and Quickbeam, when both realized they could glimpse very early into the process of the digital magic at Gentle Giant. The digi-wizards at GG provide incredibly high-res digital imaging of characters and pieces to filmmakers, visual FX companies like WETA, toy manufacturers, and animation studios. From MovieswithButter.com: At CinemaCon in April, Peter Jackson presented a exclusive ten-minute preview clip of The Hobbit. The footage, played at 45 fps, received mixed reviews from fans: complaints mainly due to the footage looking both hyper-real and unfinished.
According to Jeffrey Wells, Warner Brothers is considering “massaging” the unnaturally realistic look of the 48 fps format of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” for Comic-Con. They may add grain to the footage to make it look more cinematic and less like high-def video.

Comic-Con 2012 kicks off on Thursday and is expected to attract more than 125,000 people. Elijah Wood, reprising his Frodo Baggins for The Hobbit, will be back there this year — a decade after he accompanied director Peter Jackson to promote Fellowship of the Ring.
Wood told Reuters: “The scale of The Hobbit is larger, the anticipation is potentially greater, everything feels a little bit bigger. For so long, people didn’t think there would be a film, so the fact that there is finally, people have been anticipating this for a long time.”
Reuters says the studio will finally show extended film clips [my emphasis] at Comic-Con. Jackson is expected to turn out to meet fans and answer questions. Thanks to Ringer Elpidha for the heads-up on the article.

In December last year, I declared the first trailer a study in character.
Introducing and differentiating thirteen different dwarves to a wider audience most likely unfamiliar with the Hobbit and its ultra-beardy cast was critical for Peter Jackson. So Jackson used an entire trailer for the task.
But, because that trailer was so light on plot, we’ve been wondering ever since what degree of fidelity the story will possess and exactly how it might unfold.
The EW storybook addresses this at a single stroke. EW isn’t calling it a storybook, but that’s what Jackson has created. A gorgeously illustrated storybook that guides us through the key points of The Hobbit.

Just when it seems the many Hobbit-related events at Comic-Con couldn’t get any better, Warner Brothers has added a Hobbit cast signing event! The signing will occur at the WB booth on Saturday from 11:15am to 12:00pm, with Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, and Andy Serkis listed as participating. You’ll then want to run (not walk) to the line to get into Hall H by 2:30 for the WB panel, to include a presentation on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with Peter Jackson and numerous cast on hand.

Tonight, via their newsletter, Weta Workshop announced they will have not one but two exclusives at this years Comic-Con. The first exclusive is the very first statue in their 1:6th line of collectibles from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It is none other than Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield – with shield. This statue will be in full 1:6th scale with a price tag of $249 and an edition size of only 700 pieces world wide. The first 500 of these pieces will be sold at Comic-Con while the other 200 will be sold to those who can make it to the Weta Cave. A second version that doesn’t have the shield will be put up for sale this October to fans around the world. The second exclusive is the new print in the Middle-Earth print series, but it is the first based on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. This print captures the teaser image from The Hobbit, with Bilbo looking out the front door of Bag End. The print will have an edition size of 500 pieces world wide. The first 100 will be signed by artist Gus Hunter while the reaming 400 will be unsigned. More will be printed later in the year to be sold for those who cannot make it to Comic-Con. Both items will have a limit of 2 per person.
