Wellington, NZ, March 21, 2011—Production has commenced in Wellington, New Zealand, on “The Hobbit,” filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s widely read masterpiece.
“The Hobbit” is set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
The two films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, will be shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming will take place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.
“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. From MTV.com: Two weeks ago, news broke that Elijah Wood will be returning to Middle-Earth (a.k.a. New Zealand) as beloved Shire-dweller Frodo for a small role in Peter Jackson’s two-part “LOTR” prequel “The Hobbit” — and now MTV News has scored some exclusive details on the cameo from Wood himself.
While at the Sundance Film Festival to promote the Adam Yauch-directed Beastie Boys short “Fight for Your Right Revisited,” Wood opened up to MTV about why he’s excited for his “Hobbit” role, what it might entail and why J.R.R. Tolkein purists need not fret — or snarl like Gollum — at the idea of Frodo’s inclusion in the films (he wasn’t in the book). Check out the interview below.
Lausus writes: Conan O’Brien had a brief sketch on his Jan 11th episode showing some disappointment in the announcement that Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are returning to their roles as Gandalf and Frodo. Pretty amusing stuff. The sketch starts at about 10:15 into the monologue at the top of the show which is free to watch at www.teamcoco.com.
Elijah Wood emphasized his role in ‘The Hobbit’ films will not effect the integrity of the story in a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter:
“There only would have been reservation about taking the part if there had been something that had infringed upon the integrity of the original book,” he says. “But that was never going to be the case.”
While the ‘Rings’ reunion is happening, the actor does not believe it will be a repeat session where the main actors opted for bonding tattoos during the filming of the original series.
“This time around, I don’t think so,” says Wood. “But you never know.”
