Evangeline Lilly explains the challenges of playing Tauriel in Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’

Part one of this spotlight on Evangeline Lilly and her character Tauriel was published yesterday. Click here to read it.

(Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel.)

In the first part of this story, Evangeline Lilly discussed her childhood love for “The Hobbit,” and her decision-making process that led her to move her family to New Zealand and work with director Peter Jackson as a character not found in J.R.R. Tolkien’s 75-year-old classic. She plays an elf in the forest kingdom of Thranduil where his son Legolas also lives.

How does an actor differentiate her character in a set of films stuffed full with grand, immortal elves?

“Somebody asked me, ‘Did you study a lot of the other elves? The performances of the elves from Rings to do this role?’ I said distinctly ‘no.’ I intentionally didn’t re-watch the movies because I was afraid of trying to copy someone’s performance and I wanted it to be original.”

bg_jFUFB“All the other elves you’ve ever seen in these movies are at least twice my age, at least twice Tauriel’s age, so they are very wise and they’re very well established in their power and their understanding of the world. I’ve intentionally tried to demonstrate that she’s not there yet. She’s young, she’s only 600 years old and in elven terms, that is so young. She’s just a baby.”

Lilly is even playing some layers of the role in a way she wants those diehard fans to understand.

“I like the idea of playing with a young elf, how would they behave? How would they be different from the aged elves? And I hope that it doesn’t come across as wrong, you know what I mean? I hope it doesn’t come across to people who really know the world as she’s not quite got it down. Because that’s my goal, to not quite have it.

“She wants to be as wise, she wants to be as much of a presence as all of her elders but she’s not. She’s a kid and there’s a part of her that is always a little too excited about things or maybe a little too engaged in the world, the way kids can get. And I think that was something I wanted to tell the really diehard fans.

“I want them to know that she is young so that when they look at the performance and they look at the character they understand the context.” (more…)

Set Visit Exclusive — Bringing Lake-town to Life for ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’

(The outdoor Lake-Town wet set with extras and crew assembled for a night shoot on “The Hobbit.”)

WELLINGTON — The great cities of history have risen up around rivers, lakes and on coasts. Water holds vast and replenishing stores of food, improves transportation of people and goods, encourages trade, and of course keeps a population hydrated. Paris. London. Hong Kong. New York. Tokyo. Moscow. Boston. On and on.

Lake-town benefitted from excellent transportation and presumably a wealth of fish and food and clean, fresh water but it was built on water for a different reason.

Smaug_eyeDragons.

One dragon in particular: Smaug The Terrible.

Tolkien’s Lake-town, like real-world Venice, was built on wooden pillars sunk into water. The lake men — with the destruction of Dale seared forever into their memory — built on water for safety. We watched it in the prolog of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” while they had to live with the fear of dragon every day. Water-based living provided at least a chance against the great and terrible worm if he ever attacked again.

Survival was the challenge for the city builders in Middle-earth but for Peter Jackson’s film version of Lake-town, dragon-sized demands included creating visuals to sell a water-based town to the audience and to provide a playground to let actors fully realize characters and moments. (more…)

New reports take us on-set for two days for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Tauriel and LegolasWe all like to keep some things secret (and keep them safe); movie studios are no different.  As we get closer to the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Warner Bros. are finally lifting embargos and allowing interviews and content to be posted, which reveal spoilers, and drop hints, about what we can expect when the next film hits the big screen in December.

Our own staffer MrCere spent three months on set last year; stay tuned for some exclusive reports from him, coming soon.  Meanwhile, here are several interviews on which the press embargo has just lifted, covering a two-day set visit for members of the press early last year.

Please note, there are movie spoilers to be found within. You have been warned!

See Bilbo in Lake-town in high-resolution!

You may recall a week or so ago, Empire Magazine teased a low-resolution image of Bilbo wrapped in blankets in Lake-town. Now, courtesy of our German friends at Herr-de-ringe-film.de we have this rather fine high-resolution version for your viewing pleasure! (Word of warning, this is a largish (approx 5mb) file that is 4896 x 3264 pixels. So it may take a little while to load on slower connections.)

…the dwarves’ good feeling towards the little hobbit grew stronger every day. There were no more groans or grumbles. They drank his health, and they patted him on the back, and they made a great fuss of him; which was just as well, for he was not feeling particularly cheerful. He had not forgotten the look of the Mountain, nor the thought of the dragon, and he had besides a shocking cold. For three days he sneezed and coughed, and he could not go out, and even after that his speeches at banquets were limited to “Thag you very buch.”

Finally! See the human face of Beorn!

Beorn with Gandalf It’s one of the things that we’ve been waiting for and waiting for — the opportunity to see what Peter Jackson’s Beorn looks like in human form. From the front.

For some this will be a huge SPOILER. So run away now if you’re avoiding them! (more…)

Fans sketch Beorn’s likeness from Eagles’ description

Beorn with Gandalf Just a couple of days ago, we exclusively revealed a description of the human face of Beorn via The Eagles of Manwe.

If you missed it, go check it (warning: spoilers!) out right here!

A couple of artistic Ringers were inspired pick up pencil (or maybe their Wacom tablet) and see if they could turn the words of The Eagles of Manwe into an image of Beorn’s human likeness as it might appear on cinema screens in December.

So without further ado, here are their concepts of just what Beorn might look like! (more…)

Why are these Lake-town folk in ruined Dale?

After copious amounts of viewing of the latest Vlog (see the embedded video at the bottom), I’m just wondering what are the two individuals (clearly citizens) from Lake-town, doing in the “desolate” Dale?

What could possibly occur that drives both men and women to the destroyed city? Surely it isn’t a flashback as the snow settling on the burnt stonework is clearly visible — and hence during the time the Company passes through Dale. (more…)

Ten ways TORn serves Tolkien and Lord of the Rings fandom

TORn logoBeginning last Saturday and running through to September 4, TheOneRing.net is hosting a Pledge Drive (see the banner at the top) as well as a bunch of auctions for some really cool memorabilia and collectibles.

The day-to-day operation of the website, and the events we host, require a lot more resources than when we first started nearly 15 years ago. We sometimes find it hard to ask our readers for the help we need to keep running, so we began discussing what it is that makes TheOneRing.net worth helping out. It started out as a search for the Top Ten Moments of TORn, but the list got so long because each staff member had their own idea of important moments in TORn history. Here, instead, is something more encompassing: Ten Ways TORn helps serve Tolkien and Lord of the Rings fandom (listed in no specific order).

And, if you enjoy what we do, consider a donation (no amount too small, because every bit does help!) to keep us running!

If you can’t, that’s fine as well — keep reading, commenting and contributing. Because TORn is as much you as it is us!

If you’ve ever sent in an article, submitted a photo or report, posted on our messageboards, visited our chat, or commented on our twitter, facebook or g+, you’re the reason TheOneRing.net is among the largest and most-respected pillars of the Tolkien community on the web.

Hall of Fire chat log: Can we bear Beorn

Barliman's Chat Last weekend, The Hall of Fire examined what’s undoubtedly the movie topic of the moment — the character and appearance of Beorn. Lots of thoughtful opinions from all sides, and some interesting analysis of the mythic roots of Tolkien’s shapeshifter as well as of Alan Lee, John Howe and Ted Nasmith’s classic illustrations. Plenty of spoilers, too! For those who couldn’t attend, here’s a log.

Also, this weekend (Saturday August 24 at 6pm EDT (New York time)) we’ll be returning to our Lord of the Rings book chats. This week we begin the first chapter of book four — The Taming of Smeagol — so be sure to join us for this exciting topic! (more…)

Discover the horses of The Hobbit!

Savannah

Savannah

As well as loving Tigers, I’m also a life-long Horse-lover.  I’ve been riding since I was six and members of my family have run an Arabian horse stud for as long as I can remember.  So when we were contacted by ‘Gypsy Royal Stud’ I jumped at the chance to talk to them about their beautiful horses. Because they were one of the horse breeders that Peter Jackson turned to when he was looking for animal actors for The Hobbit.

SD calendar reveals a new image of Beorn? In human form?

The back cover of a 2014 Hobbit calendar from SD Toys reveals something interesting — what we believe is a new image of the shapeshifter Beorn, as played by Mikael Persbrandt. Excitingly, we believe it also finally answers a long-standing question about a series of spy images (and video) from Ringer Glow that we revealed way back in November 2011. This might be some heavy spoilers for some, so consider yourself pre-emptively warned!

But first, the image from SD Toys! (more…)
