BBC Wales have produced an online guide, via their iWonder site and presented by Dr Dimitra Fimi, about how the Welsh language inspired Tolkien, called “Why do the Elves in The Hobbit sound Welsh?”
What does Welsh have to do with it?
JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings combine timeless storytelling with the creation of a mythical world with its own races, history, music and languages.
The invention of new languages went hand-in-hand with the shaping of the characters that spoke them. And while Englishness is at the heart of the Shire, the home of the hobbits, for his other races Tolkien looked beyond England.
Sindarin, the Elvish language used in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations, shares many key characteristics with Welsh. How did a proud Englishman like Tolkien become so entranced by the Welsh language?

We’re hosting a Party of Special Magnificence next February — a final toast to all SIX movies, both The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy.
We’re inviting you to join us and make it happen through our Indiegogo campaign — so we can all celebrate Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth movies together!
Visit our campaign page and find out how you can help!

It’s been five days since we launched our indiegogo crowdfunder to make The One Last Party happen, and we’re already 20% of the way there! Many thanks to everyone who has already bought a ticket or pledge for a perk!
We’re busy planning all kinds of exciting things which we hope will take place at the party. This week in London staffer greendragon spoke to many of the cast, who were all thrilled to hear about the special event. Billy Boyd and Jed Brophy have lots of ideas for the live show; Richard Armitage is keen to be there, and Evangeline Lilly even said she might cut into her one week off to join us!
We’re also hoping to bring a ‘Middle-earth experience’ to the party, working with New Zealand Tourism and possibly even using Oculus Rift for an incredible virtual reality visit to the Shire. We have grand schemes!
BUT we can’t do any of this if we don’t sell enough tickets for such a party of Special Magnificence.
The indiegogo campaign is NOT about raising money for TheOneRing.net – every penny we receive will go towards creating an incredible evening for the fans. (And remember there is NO RISK that you’ll buy a ticket and get no party – if we don’t meet our goal, no money will be taken from you! We only get money raised IF the party happens!) Many folks (including some of the cast) have asked us to put on a party, to give everyone a chance to celebrate together – so that’s what we’re trying to do! We’re simply using indiegogo as a way to sell tickets in advance, and also to offer some extra exclusives and other ways to be involved.
This extraordinary opportunity to celebrate Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth movies will happen IF YOU, the fans, want it. Don’t wait to buy your ticket – we will not be selling any tickets outside of the indiegogo campaign. If you’d like to attend a special event on February 21st 2015, in Los Angeles, to celebrate with your fellow fans, to see cast perform on stage, and to enjoy an incredible evening together, buy your ticket now!
Click here to see the indiegogo campaign, and to get your ticket so you can join the Fellowship of Fans for The One Last Party.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has its world premiere in London today. The last of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films is nearly here. And so begins the end of the epic journey – mission – quest – thing – we have all been on together.
But fear not! We have no intention of letting these films sail into the West without a fanfare! So get ready to celebrate at The One Last Party – There and Back Again: a Party of Special Magnificence, a final toast to all SIX movies, both The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy.
This will be on Saturday 21st Feb 2015 – the day BEFORE the Oscars — at a venue in Los Angeles, TBA. There will be music, food, drink, entertainment (from William Kircher’s band The California Dreamers, celtic musicians Emerald Rose, and more) and all kinds of fun! But here’s the thing… Continue reading “The One Last Party – tickets available NOW!”
