As, we continue our HobbitCon coverage we have a two part experience at the Weta Workshop booth. With Part 1 you’re gonna seeall the pictures and a video of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey statues as well as The Lord of the Rings collectibles at the booth. The statues from The Hobbit looked off the charts great with so much detail, great likenesses, and a great touch by putting the Dwarven map on the elegant simple black base. The Lord of the Rings collectibles at the booth were equally as impressive including a couple items I was eagerly looking forward to seeing in person. The items I looked forward to seeing the most were the Barad-Dur environment and the Fellowship mini-statues. Barad-Dur is the coolest environment I’ve seen and it will absolutely catch the eye of anyone looking at your collection. So don’t miss out on this amazing piece when it goes up for Pre-Order July 31st. The other item or items that stood out to me from The Lord of the Rings section as the three part Fellowship statues which have already started Pre-Ordering. This set is something we’ve all waited a long time to order and seeing them all together in person was a highlight for me at the show. These are must have items if you’re a hardcore Ringer like me. TORn forum member DarkJackal (who gets full credit for this article) made a fascinating find about the 1:6 scale Thorin Oakenshield miniature being made by WETA and currently on exhibition at Comic-Con.
Seemingly, the statue comes with a backgrounder on the packaging. It reads:
A proud and noble Dwarf of resolute character and stern bearing, Thorin was the grandson of Thror of the line of Durin and heir to the lost throne of Erebor. Alongside Moria, Erebor stood as the greatest of the realms of the Dwarves, a vast kingdom carved from the living rock of The Lonely Mountain, bustling with trade and bursting with wealth.
Down upon Erebor the great dragon Smaug had fallen and the city and its people were engulfed by the inferno of his coming. Thorin and his kin were fortunate to escape with their lives, though they left everything else behind. Tonight, via their newsletter, Weta Workshop announced they will have not one but two exclusives at this years Comic-Con. The first exclusive is the very first statue in their 1:6th line of collectibles from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It is none other than Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield – with shield. This statue will be in full 1:6th scale with a price tag of $249 and an edition size of only 700 pieces world wide. The first 500 of these pieces will be sold at Comic-Con while the other 200 will be sold to those who can make it to the Weta Cave. A second version that doesn’t have the shield will be put up for sale this October to fans around the world. The second exclusive is the new print in the Middle-Earth print series, but it is the first based on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. This print captures the teaser image from The Hobbit, with Bilbo looking out the front door of Bag End. The print will have an edition size of 500 pieces world wide. The first 100 will be signed by artist Gus Hunter while the reaming 400 will be unsigned. More will be printed later in the year to be sold for those who cannot make it to Comic-Con. Both items will have a limit of 2 per person.
The Folks at Weta Workshop via their Facebook page Weta Workshop delivered a great teaser image of the upcoming environment Barad-Dur: Fortress of Sauron. This sure-to-be-amazing collectible will be unveiled to the world at Comic-Con in just a little less than a week’s time. Until then Weta is allowing fans to follow the process in bringing this collectible to the market place with a series of articles entitled Overcoming the Fear: Barad-Dur-Fortress of Sauron. Stay tuned to TORn as we bring you all the pictures, video, and information on what will be a must have for any The Lord of the Rings fan.
There is just one week until Comic Con 2012 starts with Preview Night on Wednesday, July 11. But aside from the TORn panel and WB’s panel for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, you may be wondering what else there is for a Hobbit fan to do. The Official SDCC website has put up schedules for panels, autograph sessions, films and portfolio reviews (aspiring artists, please take note). So here is your handy, dandy TORn guide to all things Hobbit and Lord of the Rings related at comic con this year (after the break)
