Last night Berlin was the host city for the European Premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and the Germans really showed the world how such an event should be done.  From the incredible Smaug décor on the red carpet, to the excellent hosts for the livestream, to the care and attention shown to the fans lining the enormous carpet, the event was fun and exciting.  Many of the cast were in attendance, and all looked to be having a great time.

If you missed it, you can watch the highlights now, in this official video from Warner Bros:

Luke as GirionWhile watching the live stream of the Berlin premiere, which is still running right now at Berlin Premiere Live Stream Luke Evans confirmed that he played Bard’s own ancestor, Girion of Dale. He only had to spend one day in costume, but as you can see from this image, that costume was very elaborate and heavy, similar to what the dwarves had to wear all the time. Luke said he was glad he only had to put on this heavy costume just the one day, but really loved playing his ancestor to bring that history to life.

IMG_6909One of the most beautiful pieces at Comic-Con 2013 came to us from our friends at Weta Workshop. This statue is a real eye catcher with a great likeness, amazing detail, and a fantastic mix of grace/power. The character that Weta created that mixes all of these together is the King of the Mirkwood Elves Thranduil. This was also a special release granted by Warner Brothers so fans could see the character and start getting pumped for the awesomeness that is to come in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

It can be argued that the biggest internet story coming out of the premiere is not spiders and bears, but a playful behind grab caught only by TheOneRing.net cameras! During our exclusive red-carpet interview with Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch sneakily snuck up and shared a pinch and a bird with his Hobbit co-star. Animated gifs have turned up everywhere on tumblr, and even Gawker’s Jezebel says this is the greatest thing to come out of it all.

Desolation_PressThis is a word-for-word transcription of a press conference held for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” in a hotel in Los Angeles after the World Premiere of the film. Seated were: Philippa Boyens, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, Peter Jackson, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Aidan Turner and Dean O’Gorman.

Press were given microphones by moderators. Although TheOneRing.net attended, for which we thank Warner Bros., we did not have a chance to ask a question to the assembled group; we apologize for some that did. Bilbo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of SmaugAs some of you may have noticed – something rather unexpected happened today.
While reviews for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug were expected to
begin getting published this coming Sunday – the embargo was lifted early and we began getting reviews today! TORN staffers, who have been lucky enough to see the film already, will be reviewing the film soon enough. First up will be our own Quickbeam, who is currently finalizing his thoughts.
