San Diego Comic Con 2015 is now in the books, let’s do a little recap for any all things related to Tolkien fandom and TORn. The TORn panel, titled “What’s next for Tolkien Fans?” was on Friday afternoon, and directly after the panel we had our annual Tolkien themed Cosplay photo Op, as seen in the first photo.
The panel itself began at 4pm, but without the snazzy little visual presentation we normally have. The laptop that the presentation was on, and had been operating just 2 hours earlier, decided it was taking the afternoon off. Apparently it helped the panel move along at a quicker pace, leaving plenty of room for questions at the end. So, what was discussed in the panel, what IS next for Tolkien fans? Join us here at TheOneRing.net in wishing a very happy birthday to everyone’s favorite dragon/dark lord, Benedict Cumberbatch. Okay, he’s also our favorite detective, soldier, spy, crypotgrapher, mad scientist and monster. One thing is for certain, his distinctive voice and vocal skills added depth to both his roles as Smaug the dragon and The Necromance in The Hobbit movies, and were a delight to listen and tremble to. Many happy returns, oh Benedict, the Tremendous!

There’s a lot going on in the next week or so for Ian McKellen fans. This Wednesday, July 15th, he’ll be taking part in a Q&A session on reddit’s “AMA” (Ask me Anything). The session runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST, so be sure to collect your questions for him and ask them here. The Q&A comes two days before the opening of Sir Ian’s new movie Mr. Holmes on Friday, July 17th. Adapted from Mitch Cullin’s 2005 novel “A Slight Trick of the Mind,” Mr Holmes has Sir Ian playing a 93 year-old, retired Sherlock Holmes, trying to piece together what happened during his last unsolved case, 30 years in the past. If you live in the L.A. area, Sir Ian and fellow Mr. Holmes actor Laura Linney will be appearing in person after the 7:15 showing at The Landmark theater, Westwood Blvd. Los Angeles. Tickets can be purchased here, and you can watch the trailer at the Mr Holmes official site.
With the opening of Mr Holmes, there are sure to be more interviews and appearances which we’ll bring to you as we hear about them. Here’s one with the Minneapolis Star Tribune to start them off: Ian McKellen talks ‘Mr. Holmes,’ Gandalf, Guthrie and gay marriage.

As many of you already know, there is sad news in our community of fans today: Sir Christopher Lee passed away Sunday morning at the age of 93 due to respiratory problems and heart failure. Of course, we all came to know and love him for his role as the evil wizard, Saruman, in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, a role that came at the end of a long, and very distinguished career as an actor in horror movies and other dramas. For many of us, it’s difficult to picture a better Count Dracula than Christopher Lee. But, for many more of us, it’s impossible to think of anyone else playing the role of Saruman. All of the professionalism, passion and dedication of his long career shone out in that role, making it perfection.
From the U.K. telegraph website, here is a nice obituary, and a short video of his career highlights. Námarië, Sir Christopher. You are dearly loved and will be dearly missed!
