Access Hollywood recently spoke to Evangeline Lilly, and touched on her role as the woodland elf Tauriel in the current production of The Hobbit. Revealingly, she provided a couple of lines of elvish (presumably Sindarin, but I’m no Tolkien language scholar) — which finally give us some tantalising clues about where the Tauriel character slots into Tolkien’s story.
She also indicated she was being extensively coached in English Received Pronunciation — same as the elves of Rivendell in Lord of the Rings. “I have a dialect coach, I have a motion coach, I have a language coach,” she said. “So I should, by rights, be great in this film!

Evangeline Lilly fears “purist” fans will hate herrole in The Hobbit because her character didn’t feature in the book and was invented solely for the fantasy film adaptation.
The Lost actress’ Sylvan elf Tauriel was created especially for director Peter Jackson‘s upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel The Hobbit.
But Lilly admits she is terrified Tolkien devotees won’t respond well when the movie epic is released next year.
Thanks to Ringer Kookie for pointing us to a great interview with Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel in The Hobbit) from SFX. In the interview, Lilly talks about her time commitments, learning elvish, archery, swordplay, and just how long she’s been a Tolkien fan.
When you played Kate you were always doing physical scenes and stunts. How are you prepping for The Hobbit?
“With every film, you have to educate yourself on the material and it’s often things you don’t know a lot about. Right now I’m studying Elvish and having conversations with people about learning how to be an archer, a swordsperson and how to fight like an elf instead of a gritty convict.” [Laughs]
Did you have any reservations about joining The Hobbit cast?
“With The Hobbit, it was a no-brainer because I have been a fan of those books since I was 13-years-old.”
