Following on from a most successful weekend in May this year (and the sun shone beautifully on Birmingham), planning for next years weekend is underway and will be held on Saturday and Sunday May 21st and 22nd. It will be at the usual venue of Sarehole Mill Recreation Ground within The Shire Country Park, in and around the area that Tolkien and his brother Hilary explored as children.
Sarehole is a lovely rural area, with more trees than in Tolkien’s day and we are basing the weekend around Tolkien’s love of trees and the forests and characters of Middle-earth. As the plans for the weekend develop we will keep you informed. In the meantime pencil in the dates shown above and we look forward to your being at this free event celebrating the life and work of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Clever plot twist, or mere coincidence (with a very decided nod and wink to The Professor)? Either way, a September 22 birthday is shared by two of our favorite Hobbits: Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. In true Hobbit fashion, we are throwing a party of special magnificence on our Main discussion board. Games, puzzles, poems and other fun activities abound, so be sure and stop by throughout the day and help celebrate!

Things are moving in the Hobbit world; there are rumors afoot of castings, contracts, scripts and even start dates. It’s all very exciting and if you were at TORn’s panels at DragonCon this year, you were prepared for it!
Yes, TheOneRing.net was present again this year at one of the world’s biggest fan-based convention. Staffers from TORn ran a table over the course of the weekend, where we had the great pleasure of chatting to fans, meeting regular TORn visitors, catching up with old friends and faithful supporters, and introducing newbies to the joys of the website. Over the four days of the convention we gave out freebies, distributed candy to those brave enough to answer Tolkien trivia, sold t-shirts to help keep the website attending conventions and events, and provided the fun of the ‘Don’t you know you’re [sic] Sam?’ photo opportunity! Apologies Samwise fans, but we decapitated Sam in a hobbit standee, so folks could pose with their head in his place; and all kinds of aliens, cartoon characters, heroes and villains stepped up over the weekend to
offer to ‘share the load…’ For images from the weekend click here. Lots more written details after the break! Continue reading “The official ‘DragonCon 2010’ report (and photos!)”

ATLANTA — Every year DragonCon seems to be as big, loud and flamboyant as it can be and each year upon return it is all of the previous year and more. Costumers never cease to amaze and first-timers attend along with thousands of annual traditionalists and of course, 2010 is no exception.
TheOneRing.net had the honor of kicking off the first day, nay the first minute of programming with a Friday morning 10 a.m. presentation. We were treated to a solid and enthusiastic crowd despite many thousands standing in labyrinth of the pre-registration line for hours to get badges and thousands of others still traveling to Atlanta to join in the fun.
Updating the world on ‘The Hobbit’ is TORn’s never-ending mission and staffers Deej, Greendragon and MrCere were there to deliver information, respond to questions and share secrets and hopes and theories with fellow fans. The always -gentlemanly Sean Astin was also at the convention to talk about the LOTR movie days and sign autographs or have photos taken with fans. Continue reading “TORn storms DragonCon”

Garfeimao writes: Southern California Tolkien fans are invited to join in the merriment of TORN’s Annual Baggins Birhday Bash, which will take place on Sunday Sept 19 starting at noon in Griffith Park one road past the Merry-Go-Round turnoff. Costumes are encouraged, and prizes will be bestowed upon the most beautifully or most creatively attired lads and ladies. There will also be fun and games, as usual, and… …maybe even the traditional impersonation contest (I would like to encourage attendees to learn some Hobbit Quotes). Oh, and you can expect a full Golfimbul match, for those who wish to swing a bat at the Goblin King’s head. There will be some wonderful prizes to be won.
