One of the greatest conventions in North America (probably the world for that matter) kicks off in less than a week and as always, DragonCon will feature a programming track dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien with special guest Sean Astin and TheOneRing.net will be there to help celebrate! For a complete schedule of the Tolkien-themed events, please click here or read on for TORn highlights. TheOneRing.net will be at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle next month! The awesome folks from WB Games have invited me to hang out at their booth all weekend! Warner Bros. games are making several LOTR themed games including ‘The War in the North’, be sure to check out their website! PAX Prime runs from September 2nd to 5th in downtown Seattle.
If you are attending PAX please drop on by to say ‘Hi!’, if you aren’t attending PAX but are in the area drop me a line, I’d love to hook up with some Ringers while I’m out west!
Ringer Cherie sent in this beautiful picture of her 17 week old puppy, Bilbo Baggins (a Corgi), and it got us thinking. We’ve never asked the fans worldwide to submit their pictures of pets named after Tolkien related characters. We know there are a lot of you out there with pictures, so let’s share them with all of Tolkien fandom!
Here are two ways to participate:
- Forums – Click on the ‘Discuss‘ link associated with this post and you will magically transported to our forum where you can submit a reply with your pet picture(s).
- Use Flickr – Post your picture in our ‘Tolkien Pet Gallery‘ on Flickr. We’ve made it a public group, so as long as you have a Flickr account, you should be able to participate.
Feel free to post in one or both places – whatever is easiest for you! We’d love to see your pictures and we will occasionally be featuring your pets right here on TORn’s homepage! Oh, and if there are any Tolkien related businesses out there that want to share some prizes for the folks who participate, drop us an email! [Discuss] [Flickr Gallery]
Update: for those of you new to posting on our message boards, no less uploading pictures, there’s an excellent tutorial at the TORn Image Guide (by board member Magpie) and/or you can email Altaira@theonering.net for help.
Darren writes: Here’s a link to a BBC programme about British novelists. There is a section dedicated to Tolkien that starts around the 02.40 minutes mark. More..
Garfeimao writes: Southern California Tolkien fans are invited to join in the merriment of TORN’s Annual Baggins Birhday Bash, which will take place on Sunday Sept 19 starting at noon in Griffith Park one road past the Merry-Go-Round turnoff. Costumes are encouraged, and prizes will be bestowed upon the most beautifully or most creatively attired lads and ladies. There will also be fun and games, as usual, and… …maybe even the traditional impersonation contest (I would like to encourage attendees to learn some Hobbit Quotes). Oh, and you can expect a full Golfimbul match, for those who wish to swing a bat at the Goblin King’s head. There will be some wonderful prizes to be won. Each year TheOneRing.net makes its convention shirts available for those not able to attend DragonCon and Comic-Con but Monday these shirts will become unavailable, probably forever. Quantities in some sizes are already very limited but we must soon take the offer off the website and send the remaining shirts to Atlanta Georgia for DragonCon 2010 where TORn will participate in the Tolkien Track. We get e-mails all the time asking about the availability of older TORn shirts and we are always sorry to inform people that they just aren’t available anywhere, ever after we run out. Consider this your last chance to get these exclusive shirts. U.S. residents click here to see the shirts and place your orders. (Prices and shipping costs are for U.S. customers only.)
