Since 2003, fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work have gathered each March to celebrate and share his writing with each other and the public. Set by the Tolkien Society on March 25 to commemorate the downfall of Sauron in “The Lord of the Rings,” the idea of Tolkien Reading Day was inspired by the annual bloomsday celebration of the works of James Joyce.
In Los Angeles, the local smial of the Tolkien Society, Tolkien Forever, has been observing Reading Day since 2006. Open to all who appreciate Tolkien’s work, volunteers sign up to read selections that may range from favorites like “Riddles in the Dark” to lesser-known pieces like the children’s book “Mr. Bliss.”
This year in Los Angeles, Reading Day will be held on Saturday, March 22, and will return to The Last Bookstore downtown, a venue worth visiting for any book lover. Volunteers who would would like to sign up to read should visit the Facebook event page for more details. Come out and share your favorite Tolkien selection with everyone!
For those in other parts of the country and the world, the Tolkien Society is cataloging events around the globe as they are scheduled. Don’t see your town on the list? Start your own Tolkien Reading Day! All you need is a few friends and a copy of “The Hobbit” to get started…

And it comes with lots and lots of water from the sky. Sorry, we’ve been in the midst of very long drought here in So Cal, so it was easy to overlook the fact that this is supposed to be our wettest month. Guess nature is trying to reassert herself here.
That being said, we are still planning to have the ‘Ringer’s Take Disneyland’ event Saturday morning. We may curtail some of the meet ups, we don’t want anyone to get sick. So we will have the 10am meet up and then a group photo upon entering, and then we will have a lunch meet up around 12:30pm in the Pizza Port next to Space Mountain. Beyond that, we leave it up to you to stay or leave as your soggy shoes see fit.
Please meet at 10am on the giant compass in the middle of the entrance pavilion halfway between Disneyland and California Adventure. For those who frequent Disney a lot, you already know this means being in the parking lot by 9:45am in order to take the tram and walk this distance. For those needing to either buy their tickets, or convert an online purchase to an active ticket, you will want to hit the parking lot no later than 9:30am, possibly earlier. If you are early and it is raining, jump into the La Brea Bakery for a coffee or croissant or something before braving the rain. It is just before the box offices.
For more details, please visit our Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/704747639545289 including the special ticket offer, but hurry up, it expires at 9pm pacific time. I will shortly be adding a Note on TORn’s main facebook page that is the little scavenger hunt game we will be playing, weather permitting. Feel free to print and bring with you, as soon as I get it up.
On a quick note about the Oscar Party on Sunday afternoon, try to arrive around 4pm or so, just because parking will be easier on you. The Telecast begins at 5:30pm, but we will be showing the Red Carpet arrivals too. Dress code is fairly casual, just think cocktail party, business casual, or Hollywood Chic. Costumes are also welcome, or what we like to call Costume-lite. Because it may still be fairly moist and cool, most of you will probably just want to show up in sweaters and nice slacks.
We will have a few items to auction off, and there will be an Oscar Pool game, those notes will also appear very shortly on the TORn’s main facebook page. And last but not least, we will be closing down tickets for the Oscar party at Midnight tonight. Details about the party and tickets can be found on the Event page https://www.facebook.com/events/806336542716595/ As usual, we must remind you that while we have had cast and crew attend the parties in the past, their presence has never been promised or guaranteed. They all have been invited, but they also all have very busy schedules and a lot of commitments on their time with all the other Academy Award events that happen on the same night. This party is for us, the fans, to meet and hang out together and cheer them on and then go back to having our fun.

Calling all Dwarves, Elves, Hobbits and Wizards, you are hereby invited to ‘Ringers take Disneyland’ on Saturday, March 1 as part of the Oscar weekend festivities for fans of Middle-earth. Disneyland has been the site for Star Wars days, Potter Days, Browncoat Days and more, so why not fans of Middle-earth?
Here at TORn headquarters, we began to wonder what else we could do on Oscar weekend apart from our “One Dragon, One Party” that would be fun for locals and out-of-towners alike. LA and Hollywood are a popular tourist destination for dozens of reasons, but we needed a place that everyone wants to go to at least once in their lifetime, and is also family friendly and super fun. Disneyland fits the bill in oh so many ways, not the least of which is the fact that it has Dwarves, a Wizard and Mines, as well as many other Middle-earth-like realms and magical folk.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced their annual award nominations this morning. ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ picked up 2 nominations. Peter Swords King, Richard Taylor, and Rick Findlater are nominated for Best Make-up and Hair. They are nominated alongside worthy contenders ‘The Butler’, ‘Behind the Candelabra’, ‘American Hustle’, and ‘The Great Gatsby’. Each film has its own unique style or time period, whether set in Middle-earth or a fantastical version of the roaring 20′s. The overall awards buzz (and love) for ‘American Hustle’ might swing momentum its way even in this category.
Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, David Clayton, and Eric Reynolds are nominated for Best Special Visual Effects. In this tough field, ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ is going up against ‘Pacific Rim’, ‘Gravity’, ‘Iron Man 3′ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’. Smaug the Mighty is facing the most competition from the groundbreaking effects in ‘Gravity’, the odds-on favorite. ‘Gravity’ has the most nominations with 11 overall including for Best Film and Director. Following behind are ’12 Years a Slave’ and ‘American Hustle’ with 10 nominations each.
See the full list of nominees.
