Ahead of next week’s performance of The Lord of the Rings Symphony in Vancouver, Canada, the guys over at The Province snagged an interview with Howard Shore and asked him about whether he’ll be returning to Middle-earth to score the upcoming Hobbit films. And for fans of the outstanding music Shore’s composed for The Lord of the Rings films, his reply should serve to satiate sufficiently… at least until the score itself finally debuts a couple years from now.
“We’ve talked about making these movies for many years, at least since 2002. It looks like finally it’s going to be happening. I’ll be working on it for the next three years — it’s going to consume a lot of my time and work now.”
The Games blog caught up with Mr Gollum himself to discuss the role of Monkey and his passion for performance capture. Andy Serkis as Monkey in Enslaved Andy Serkis as Monkey in Enslaved Since his breakthrough digital role as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Andy Serkis has become the film industry’s go-to thespian on all things digital. And after he won games critics’ hearts (if not, perhaps, consumers) with his contribution to last month’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, we thought we’d find out a bit more about what tempts a high-profile actor to spend hours wearing only a skintight black bodysuit covered in Pritt Stick and ping-pong balls. An anonymous Ringer sends in this heads up about a Hobbit casting call in Tauranga, New Zealand:
The Bay of Plenty Times (Tauranga’s regional newspaper) had an ad in the weekend edition’s classifieds. It was an official casting call for The Hobbit, asking for men under 5’7″ and women under 5’2″, for filming in Matamata in early 2011. They said they will be in Tauranga on Wed 24th Nov between 2 and 4pm at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, cnr Devonport Rd and 11th Ave. Gutted that I’m 5’9″!
TORn message board member AlexMaglor has pointed us to a great interview (albeit in Spanish) with Martin Freeman over at Spanish website elpais.com. But thanks to the linguistic skills of message board member Empedocles, we’ve now got the entire interview translated in English.
Here’s some snippets from the translated interview:
“I know my work plan” says Freeman. “I start in January, then I’ll have a break in the summer so I can shoot the second season of Sherlock, the BBC show where I portray Watson, and then I’ll be back in New Zealand in September in order to finish the movie by the end of the year”. The Englishman says summer because he’s thinking about the northern hemisphere seasons, but it will be winter in New Zealand.
“I wasn’t a fan of Tolkien before, I am now. A couple of weeks ago, I tried Bilbo’s hairy feet for the first time, and also the ears, although mine are big enough already, and the hair too. Moreover, they made molds out of those parts of my body since I’m going to be using prosthetics for many months. How did I look? Really different… but I’m ready to be Bilbo.”
Head over to our message boards for the translated interview and to read about Freeman’s conversations with Guillermo and PJ during the past couple of months.
