This story comes to us thanks to the wonders of the wireless world and the internets. Early this afternoon I received a call from a rabid Ringer Diamond T letting me know about a CNBC reporter (possibly at the SXSW Film Fest) who dropped a bomb during an interview about the future of 3D movies. He claims to have heard ‘Rumblings’ about New Line (Warner Bros.) releasing LOTR in 3D! Ringer Chris sends along this intriguing spy report that seems to confirm that Howard Shore will be scoring ‘The Hobbit’ films:
Hi there! I was at the world premiere of the Fellowship of the Ring performed live to the film concert in Lucerne/Switzerland last night, at which Howard Shore was present. Before the concert there was a brief talk with him, during which he mentioned that “WE are going to start on the screenplay soon,” when asked about The Hobbit. Imagine my Ringer heart taking a leap of joy. At the signing taking place after the concert, I did ask, just be sure, if I had heard correctly, and Howard confirmed that yes, he will be scoring The Hobbit. He’s hopeful that New Line will work something out with the Tolkien Estate’s because, “It’s too important a project.” Let’s hope he’s right! I should not neglect to mention that the concert was amazing and conductor Ludwig Wicki, the 21st Century Orchestra and Choir, the Luzerner Saengerknaben choir and the soloists got a standing ovation for at least 5 minutes. I can’t wait for March 2009, when The Two Towers concert is tentatively scheduled.

Barring any earth-shattering or unforeseen changes Guillermo del Toro will direct “The Hobbit.” However, the contracts are not signed and the deal is not final according to a source close to the film.
In a conversation with TheOneRing.net, the source called it a 99% probability that del Toro would be helming the double picture but in Hollywood nothing is final until it is final. The official announcement, which – New Line Cinema will be eager to make when all the t’s are crossed and the i’s are dotted – will come after the writer’s strike is settled. Huge news is breaking as we head into the weekend. The MTV Movie Blog has posted a feature with Elijah Wood, Frodo, discussing his willingness to go back again for the ‘Hobbit’ films. Besides Elijah’s enthusiasm for reprising his role as Frodo, he seems to imply that the majority of the LOTR cast can expect to participate in the ‘in-between’ Hobbit film. Does it feel like 1999 to anybody else? A strange tickle of excitement has fluttered back into Tolkien fandom with the announcement that New Line Cinema will be going forward with its two-film package centered on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.”
For some the feeling is dread, and I recall back in “the good old days” how skeptical I was that anybody could begin to capture on film the beauty and ugliness, the epic grandeur and the domestic tranquility, the fantastic and the familiar of the Middle-earth I had been reading about practically since I first picked up a book.
