For anyone who is addicted to ‘tower defense’ type games on their iPhone, you will be getting an amazing Christmas present this year. The folks from Glu Mobile are releasing an officially licensed The Lord of the Rings game app for the iPhone titled ‘The Lord of the Rings: Middle-earth Defense’.
The Lord of the Rings: Middle-earth Defense – Relive the major battles from the epic movie trilogy as you take command of Frodo, Aragorn and many other classic characters in a strategic tower defense game.
Gizmodo has posted a video of the gameplay featuring ‘story mode’ with Aragorn and Legolas are battling some ringwraiths and wargs (or at least it looks that way from the video). This is the first time we are seeing the gameplay, and it is expected to be available in December for download. Jump over to Gizmodo to check out the gameplay. Thanks to TORn Staffer Jincey for the heads up! [Gizmodo] [Glu Press Release]

This fall, a very special Fellowship will undertake one of the most epic journeys in Turbine’s The Lord of the Rings Online. The Fellowship’s Walk is an online fundraising event for Child’s Play Charity, an organization providing toys and games to sick kids in hospitals, and is being organized by The Casual Stroll to Mordor blog and podcast.
On the traces of Frodo and his friends, the Casual Stroll to Mordor writers will walk from Bag End up to Rivendell, and maybe beyond. For every donation made to Child’s Play, the Fellowship will take one step further towards the healing house of Elrond. More..

After posting the newspaper advertisement from Wellington’s Dominion Post, we heard from official sources that indeed, it is real and authentic and official. Turns out, everything printed was exactly what was meant. The source said:
A preliminary casting call means: We don’t have a green light, but we do need to be prepared in the event that we get one!
Also as stated, it isn’t a call for extras, it is simply gathering folks around Wellington who might serve as scale doubles, much as they were used it the LOTR production. There is no word from Los Angeles studios on greenlights, directors or casting.
And, to clarify the source also said:
The NZ Dance and Drama Centre is simply being used as a venue for this casting call, and is not the home of our casting department.
So, the news is still good news for those wanting “Hobbit” movies and this wasn’t happening several months ago but we are still in a state of “hurry up and wait.”

In our report on TORn’s presence at DragonCon we made a mistake in the URL of the wonderful Tolkien Shop, who donated our hobbits standee and all the pens we gave away! Their website is in fact www.tolkienshop.com
Go and check out the shop! It’s not just a website – in fact it’s the only bricks and mortar shop in the world which is dedicated solely to Tolkien and his works. It’s located in Leiden, Holland – so if you find yourself in the Netherlands, you could visit in person! Meanwhile the rest of us can enjoy the store thanks to the wonders of the internet! Many thanks to Tolkien Shop again for supporting us at DragonCon!
