Howard Leslie Shore (born October 18, 1946) is an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy Award-winning Canadian composer, orchestrator, conductor and music producer best known for composing the scores for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, the score for The Silence of the Lambs, and for the films of David Cronenberg. He is also a prolific composer of concert works; his first opera, The Fly, based on the plot (though not the score) of Cronenberg’s 1986 film premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on 2 July 2008. An original organ piece will debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra for the John Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania entitled Fanfare on 27 September 2008. Mark Wahlberg–who plays one of the leads in director Peter Jackson’s upcoming supernatural tearjerker The Lovely Bones–told SCI FI Wire that playing Jack Salmon was “by far the best experience I’ve had in my career.” It’s one of several projects the star is working on. The Lovely Bones began as a best-selling novel by Alice Sebold. It is told from the afterlife point of view of a teenage girl who was viciously raped and murdered and follows what happens to her surviving family. Her unsolved death tears the family apart as her father, Jack Salmon, becomes obsessed with vengeance. Superficially, the character bears some resemblance to Wahlberg’s other role, the vengeance-seeking title character in the upcoming supernatural-tinged cop thriller Max Payne.
