San Diego Comic Con 2015 is now in the books, let’s do a little recap for any all things related to Tolkien fandom and TORn. The TORn panel, titled “What’s next for Tolkien Fans?” was on Friday afternoon, and directly after the panel we had our annual Tolkien themed Cosplay photo Op, as seen in the first photo.
The panel itself began at 4pm, but without the snazzy little visual presentation we normally have. The laptop that the presentation was on, and had been operating just 2 hours earlier, decided it was taking the afternoon off. Apparently it helped the panel move along at a quicker pace, leaving plenty of room for questions at the end. So, what was discussed in the panel, what IS next for Tolkien fans? If you’re a fan of the strategy and/or collectibility of the classic War of the Ring board game, take note that the anniversary release of the 2nd edition will be available via pre-order for 48 hours only starting tomorrow, July 20th, 6:00 p.m., GMT (2:00 p.m. EST) and running to 6:00 pm. This new edition of the game will feature a set of 205 figures, hand painted in a high quality style; a hot-foil stamped game board, about 20% larger than the normal board included in Second Edition; a unique hardcover strategy guide, the “War of the Ring Companion”, written by Kristofer Bengtsson and featuring beautiful artwork by John Howe. The game board, cards and rules will be updated to reflect all the changes introduced by the Second Edition and to incorporate the latest rulings and frequently asked questions.
The Anniversary Release of War of the Ring Second Edition is scheduled to release in Spring, 2016. Due to the limited print run, it will be sold by preorder only, at a price of $ 369.00 (about € 330) plus postage and packing.

If you were lucky enough to be at Comic-Con 2015 you were not only able to see this in person but snag it as well. The amazing talent that is Jerry Vanderstelt has a new Sauron print available for all Middle-earth fans to add to their collection. Titled “Dark Majesty” this print captures Sauron reaching through the print with The One Ring all lit up as he comes for his prey. This print can be had in 16 x 20 Lithographs and 17 x 22 Paper Giclees. Keep an eye on Vanderstelt Studio store to make sure you add a fantastic rendition of the Dark Lord himself.

We’ve completed another Comic-Con and once again our friends at Weta Workshop did not disappoint. There are new pieces from both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, thus letting fans add to the amazing work from Weta many of us already have. From The Lord of the Rings comes one of the coolest looking orcs in the Uruk-hai Swordsman piece, another great environment in Minas Tirith, and the mini line adds Frodo Baggins. The Uruk-hai and Minas Tirith are due to ship during quarter four of this year while Frodo is due in quarter three.

If you’ve been around TheOneRing.net for a while… correction: if you’ve been around TheOneRing.net for a really, really long time, you might remember the section of our site called GreenBooks. GreenBooks’ tag-line was: Exploring the Words and Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, and that’s exactly what our staff and guest contributors did there for many years. Sections included Quickbeam’s Out on a Limb, Turgon’s Bookshelf, Anwyn’s Counterpoint, and others, and explored topics on everything Tolkien with some movie and Peter Jackson articles thrown in for good measure.
Unfortunately, the old TORn site crashed early in 2007, which turned out to be a good thing as it forced us into the 21st century, adopting a new format that allows our readers to comment directly to articles (what a concept). However, GreenBooks became relegated to our old archived site, and the cobwebs grew thick there. Some of us oldies who know the right paths to take, still delight in poking around the old place every now and then, and while doing so recently it occurred to me that there’s no reason to leave such literary gems languishing in the cobwebs. So, once a week or so, I thought I’d dust one off and re-post it.
The one I selected for this week is titled: “Justice, Mercy and Redemption” by staff member, and co-author of TheOneRing.net’s books: “The People’s Guide to J.R.R. Tolkien,” and “More People’s Guide to J.R.R. Tolkien,” Anwyn. Also, if you’d like to take a peek, the old GreenBooks section is here.
