desolation of smaug poster It’s the last quarter of the year, but there are still a bunch of movies in the SF-fantasy genres to make their debut, including Thor: the Dark World, Carrie, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Ender’s Game and, of course, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The folks over on SF-Fantasy.com are running a reader poll to discover the most-anticipated SF-fantasy movie coming out in the remainder of 2013 (Gravity is in there oddly, but lets pretend or something). Seems as though the Stephen King fans are putting some heavy backing in for Carrie so far — time to put Desolation of Smaug tops, surely? bg_wxFiK Over at Forbes.com, Scott Mendelson analyses the cost of The Hobbit movie trilogy, and why he believes that even at a cost of $561 million USD (with some post-production and marketing expenses still to come), it’s a bargain for the studios.

Imagine you’re a studio executive and you had the opportunity to spend $200 million a pop on three films in a trilogy that was all-but-guaranteed to earn $800-$1 billion at the worldwide box office per-installment.

You’d probably agree in a heartbeat and plan how to spend your bonus. So when you read about the “shocking” news [Demosthenes: I didn’t think the news was that shocking, frankly] from Variety that Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy has thus far cost $561 million, don’t be too alarmed. All-told, it’s actually a pretty smart investment. Continue reading “Why The Hobbit movie trilogy is a bargain”

Now, courtesy of our German friends at Herr-de-ringe-film.de we have this rather fine high-resolution version for your viewing pleasure! (Word of warning, this is a largish (approx 5mb) file that is 4896 x 3264 pixels. So it may take a little while to load on slower connections.)

They drank his health, and they patted him on the back, and they made a great fuss of him; which was just as well, for he was not feeling particularly cheerful. He had not forgotten the look of the Mountain, nor the thought of the dragon, and he had besides a shocking cold. For three days he sneezed and coughed, and he could not go out, and even after that his speeches at banquets were limited to “Thag you very buch.”
