As you are well aware, TheOneRing.net is a 100% volunteer not for profit website. We’ve been fan-powered for nearly 14 years, and are looking to keep it that way. From Aug 24 through Sept 4th, we are holding our first annual pledge drive, appropriately named, ‘Light the Beacons: TheOneRing.net’s Fellowship Fundraiser.’ If you believe your experience with TheOneRing.net brings value to your personal Tolkien experience, please consider a donation. BBB-Baggins Bday cakeSouthern California Tolkien fans are invited to join in the merriment of TORN’s Annual Baggins Birthday Bash, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 22 starting at noon in Griffith Park in the Mineral Wells area. This is a new Location, so look at the new Directions and Map link below, which clearly shows Mineral Wells just past the golf course. We will be celebrating the Birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, and the impending release of “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug” in just a few short months.

Costumes are encouraged, and we may have a prize or two for the most beautifully or most creatively attired lads and ladies. There will also be fun and games, as usual, and …maybe even the traditional impersonation contest (I WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE ATTENDEES TO LEARN SOME HOBBIT QUOTES!). And because it was such a success last year, we will have the Reading Corner again, so bring your books and bring your reading voice. We do have some Hobbit Activity books to share with children, families of all sizes and ages are more than welcome. lastunicornposterTime for our live webcast TORnTUESDAY! This week we are thrilled to have our friend join us for a special talk about Hobbits and Unicorns. Certainly Peter S. Beagle has stood at the intersection of many fandoms over his amazing career, including writing “The Lord of the Rings” screenplay in 1978 for Ralph Bakshi and then going on to write for Star Trek: The Next Generation during its heyday. Fans of THE LAST UNICORN will surely delight in his wit and playful manner, as Peter always brings out the lyrical found in every day things.

On the eve of a special event tomorrow at the Newport Beach Film Festival (see more here), Peter is going to screen the animated film based on his most famous book at USC tonight! We are going to sit and catch up with him a bit.

We launch TORn TUESDAY every week at 5:00PM Pacific: brought to you by host Clifford “Quickbeam” Broadway and producer Justin “That There is a Bear” Sewell — Our innovative live show includes worldwide fans who join us on the Live Event page with a built-in IRC chat (affectionately known as Barliman’s Chat room). Be part of the fun and mischief every week as we broadcast *live* from Meltdown Comics in the heart of Hollywood, U.S.A.!

And yes our YouTube channel will have this archived later.  You can find us on www.youtube.com/the1nering

Join TheOneRing.net as we share ‘The Hobbit’ with schools to encourage literacy.

TheOneRing.net is raising money to send copies of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic, ‘The Hobbit,’ to schools . In a time when education funding is on the decline, books like ‘The Hobbit’ are simply not purchased for children on a regular basis. As a result, those students are not introduced to the wonderful world of J.R.R. Tolkien, a world we have all learned to love and appreciate.

Today, we are honored to use our extensive international reach to announce the S.H.I.R.E. Project, a real world initiative to help improve the reading skills of children worldwide. The S.H.I.R.E. Project stands for Sharing the Hobbit to Improve REading.

Through helping Schools and Teachers get copies of The Hobbit, and other works of J.R.R. Tolkien, we can hope to expand the world of Tolkien to new readers and improve the reading skills of the world’s youth at the same time.

The first Teacher we want to help is Derek Wright who teaches at Alpharetta High School in Fulton County Georgia. Derek wants to help spread the love of Tolkien to his students, love of fantasy, and help improve the reading of his students. He needs 120 copies of The Hobbit to do this. So we’re calling on all of you to help us help Derek in his goals as a first year teacher.

Please help donate via this PayPal button to get Derek and his students those books. We are looking to raise $1000 to make this purchase. Please consider a donation of $10 or more! Thank you in advance and look for an update from us when we reach our goal!
