After seeing Geoff Boucher at Entertainment Weekly start a Twitter hashtag earlier this month called “Great Moments in Fake Hall H history” TORn staffer Justin wondered what a similar series based around The Hobbit animated movies of the ’70s would have looked like. Here are his thoughts.

Southern California Tolkien fans are invited to join in the merriment of TORN’s Annual Baggins Birthday Bash, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 22 starting at noon in Griffith Park in the Mineral Wells area. This is a new Location, so look at the new Directions and Map link below, which clearly shows Mineral Wells just past the golf course. We will be celebrating the Birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, and the impending release of “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug” in just a few short months.
Costumes are encouraged, and we may have a prize or two for the most beautifully or most creatively attired lads and ladies. There will also be fun and games, as usual, and …maybe even the traditional impersonation contest (I WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE ATTENDEES TO LEARN SOME HOBBIT QUOTES!). And because it was such a success last year, we will have the Reading Corner again, so bring your books and bring your reading voice. We do have some Hobbit Activity books to share with children, families of all sizes and ages are more than welcome. Join Fili and Kili as they attempt to film an episode with J.R.R. Tolkien’s great-grandson Royd… and proceed to fail. Epically.

At a recent event in Edinburgh, Scotland, ‘Doctor Who’ showrunner Steven Moffat addressed Peter Jackson’s eagerness to direct an episode of the classic show:
“He’s serious about it. We talked at The Hobbit premiere – he just wants a Dalek. So we’ll give him a Dalek and he’ll direct an episode. I think he’d like to us to go to New Zealand. I think it’s entirely possible.”
Series 8 is scheduled to start filming in January 2014, however there has been no word yet on when PJ would film his episode.
It’s not likely we’ll see the TARDIS flying over Hobbiton, however I think it is very likely that PJ will get his wish to film against the gorgeous backdrop of New Zealand.
Thanks to Blogtor Who for the Q & A highlights.

Sylvester McCoy, Middle-earth wizard Radagast The Brown, celebrated his birthday August 20, turning 70 years old. He was born in Dunoon, Scotland to an Irish mother and English father, killed in action in World War II a month before his son was born, in 1943. McCoy was on stage and in children’s television and then was, most famously, chosen as the seventh incarnation of the title character in the television series “Doctor Who.”
He is known for his comedy roles and most recently as the slightly wacky wizard — whom Gandalf considers a very great one in his own way — in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” He is believed to play an important role in the next two films as well, helping Gandalf in the film trailer for the second flick, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”
McCoy is scheduled to appear as part of the Tolkien Track at Dragon Con in Atlanta, Georgia, August 30 – September 2. He will appear twice as part of the Tolkien’s Middle-earth Track (click here for the full schedule) that includes Manu Bennett, William Kircher and Graham McTavish. TheOneRing.net will be on hand during all of Dragon Con along with a table to meet with fellow fans, sell t-shirts and deliver three panels about the films along with a good contingent of Tolkien fans. The programming features 28 Tolkien-themed panels, believed to be the largest in one place in North America in 2013.
Below is McCoy’s chat with Clifford Broadway, our own Quickbeam on TORn Tuesday. TheOneRing also hopes to publish an interview with McCoy from our embed on the set of The Hobbit in the near future.
