Yet another fun, and interesting, thing for Hobbit fans to collect – this just in from the New Zealand Post: New Zealand Post is set to produce stamps and commemorative coins featuring some of the unique characters of Middle-earth later in the year. In an agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, Warner Bros. Pictures, and the filmmakers, New Zealand Post also has exclusive rights to produce legal tender commemorative coins that celebrate Sir Peter Jackson’s trilogy of films based on The Hobbit, productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. New Zealand Post has revealed one of the stamps to give fans a sneak peek at what they can expect in November. We are the only country in the world with the rights to produce legal tender commemorative coins, featuring characters from The Hobbit Trilogy, and we are delighted to be involved and show support for the New Zealand Film Industry,” said Ivor Masters, Head of Stamps and Coins at New Zealand Post. The CBS “Sunday Morning” variety news show had a nice interview with Elijah Wood this weekend. It included a short retrospective of much of his entire career from his debut with a small part in “Back to the Future II” (remember that?) to his current role in the TV series “Wilfred.” They also touched quite a bit on his role as Frodo in “The Lord of the Rings” and in the upcoming Hobbit movies; oh, and his love of music and food! Follow the link for a transcript – it’s definitely worth a read. Read More….

The folks at Gwaith-i-Phethain, The Fellowship of the Word-smiths, have translated the runes tattooed across Dwalin’s hands that we discovered in the most recent photos released from the Hobbit movies. If you haven’t seen it already, it’s this one (potential spoiler warning).
G-i-P tells us that the runes are in the mode Angerthas Moria, and read: Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu! ‘Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you’ (Baruk Khazâd – right hand, Khazâd ai-mênu – left hand). Highlight to read the hidden text!

Ringer Maya sends us this report from today’s signing at the Weta Cave.
The queues were especially long this afternoon at Weta Cave. The cave is usually rather busy and packed with tourists, movie fans, Tolkien fans and other enthusiastic visitors, but today was exception even in busy times’ standards. Like many others, I too arrived at the cave today, my own wee elfling in tow, willing to brave the long queue especially to meet illustrator Alan Lee and to have him sign our copy of The Hobbit 2013 Official Calendar.
It was such a delight to find out that John Howe, the other major illustrator on the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies was there as well! Continue reading “Report: Alan Lee and John Howe at the Weta Cave”
From Stuff.co.nz: Sir Peter Jackson’s plans to build a world-class film museum in Shelly Bay were scuppered when Sir Ngatata Love’s partner sought $750,000 in consultancy fees to help secure the land.
Months before the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust gained the right to buy the former air force base on the Miramar Peninsula from the Crown, Jackson wrote to Sir Ngatata outlining a plan to create a permanent home for his vast array of Lord of the Rings props.
“I have always thought that Shelly Bay would be an ideal site for a state-of-the-art exhibition building of international standard,” Jackson wrote in March 2008.
