LOS ANGELES and AUCKLAND, New Zealand, March 5 /PRNewswire/ — Academy Award®-winning director Sir Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings) selected Andres Borghi from Argentina as winner of the 100% Pure New Zealand Presents Your Big Break (www.your-big-break.com) short film competition today. Borghi’s film, “Working Day,” will air on IFC just prior to the Film Independent Spirit Awards live broadcast on March 5 at 8 p.m. Pacific/11 p.m. Eastern. Kara Maloney writes: I just wanted to let you know that I will be teaching an online course on Tolkien and his medieval sources this summer entitled “Going Medieval on Tolkien: Tolkien’s Sources and Inspirations from Medieval English”. The course runs May 25th through June 25th, and will include a reading of “Lord of the Rings” as well as some of Tolkien’s medieval sources and various scholarship regarding the two. It’s an open enrollment online course through Binghamton University, one of the SUNY schools. A four credit class, it counts for both General Ed and Writing credit. We’ve been getting unconfirmed reports that LOTR still photographer Pierre Vinet has passed away. His official Facebook page is filled with condolences from friends and fans alike, including Royd Tolkien.
His last film was 2007’s ‘The Water Horse’ however Pierre has been active as a still photographer for motion pictures since the early 90’s. He worked on several Peter Jackson films including King Kong, The Frighteners, Heavenly Creatures and Braindead. His other films include the Narnia films, The Whole Nine Yards, and The Virgin Suicides.
Pierre’s iconic photos of the LOTR character were some of the first images released from the production and are still seen on thousands of products worldwide. See his LOTR photos here…
UPDATE: We can now confirm that Pierre has passed away recently. Condolences to his wife Marjory, friends and family from TheOneRing.net. Please leave notes on his Facebook page, his wife plans to keep it going in his memory.
Ed writes: Hello, just last week I visited the Hobbiton set and in the distance I saw a man in a white shirt and hat with grey hair. I knew it was Dan Hennah. I could also sort of guessed and could tell that it was Brian Massey standing next to him. As the tour got closer I found out I was right. I went up to Brian and said “Are you Brian?” I think he was a little surprised that I knew him. No one else in the group even knew who Dan was, shame shame.
