Associate physics professor Rhett Allain recently posted an entertaining analysis of the speed and distance of the lighting of the Beacons of Gondor in his dotphysics blog. Even if mathematical equations make you cross-eyed, his tongue-in-cheek logic still makes it an entertaining read:
“The Lord of the Rings trilogy came on TV again recently. My wife and I can’t help but to watch this even though we have it on DVD. Anyway, I was thinking about the part where Gondor sends a signal to Rohan asking them for military aid. Since this was before the invention of email, they had to do it with a signal fire.”

Hovey writes: Seems like Warner Brothers is intending to release the Theatrical editions by themselves as well. Look for these on September 14. I wonder how much these will get flamed for quadruple-dipping?
Sideshow Collectibles has started their Comic-Con celebration early with the launch of their month-long Online Comic-Con. Each day they are revealing new products, exclusive discounts, and a slew of contests and giveaways. Today’s super secret product release was the Gandalf Statue, part of their recently launched Lord of the Rings Statue line-up. These statues, like the previous Sideshow/Weta line-up, are made of heavyweight polystone. Unlike the past line-up, the hope is to capture the essence of each character instead of simply capturing a moment from the films. They released Aragorn as Strider a few weeks ago, teased Legolas in a video, and now have made the Gandalf statue fully available for pre-order today.
