NZSO recording DOS. Orchestral recording for The Desolation of Smaug soundtrack in the Wellington Town Hall has concluded. It also seems as though the choral(?) work occurring in London for the soundtrack is almost complete. It’s all very hush-hush though.
Additional Orchestrator and Conductor Conrad Pope reported on his Facebook:
With the superb first trumpet of the NZSO, Jon Dante celebrating the end of a series of some 29(?) sessions with the NZSO. Making music with the NZSO was wonderful and I look forward to working with them again — not only are they a superb concert orchestra, they are a remarkable “film orchestra” — they read difficult music accurately right out of “the chute”. But now, after 3 pictures, recording sessions in Wellington and London, since June — it’s time to sleep in, rest up and fly home and await the next assignment.
The Desolation of Smaug Annual 2014 If you’ve been thinking about grabbing yourself a copy of The Desolation of Smaug 2014 Annual, the folks at German website Premium Format have posted up a bunch of great images (instead of the terrible ones you usually see that use way too much flash) that showcase just how good this hardcover book looks.

The set, which has just five mini-figs — Bard the Bowman, Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, a Lake-town Guard and the Master of Lake-town — also features several Lake-town buildings, and a boat. Looking over the artwork again, I got thinking about the significance of that boat and exactly what this Lake-town chase might be, and its relation to what we saw in the trailer itself. So, from here on in, we’ll be talking about movie spoilers! Continue reading “Spoiler analysis: Lake-town Chase Lego set and the Hobbit trailer offer some story deviation clues”
The previous two TV spots didn’t feature any new scenes. This one, however, features some all-new dialogue that we haven’t heard before from Thranduil, Bilbo and Gandalf — plus an entirely different closing scene! Personally, I’m betting Bilbo’s line occurs somewhere in the deeps of Mirkwood.
Anyway, it’s stirring stuff — check out the full 30-second clip below! And, oh yes, potential spoilers! Thanks to Ringer Beth for the heads-up.
