Previous years’ panels have had standing-room-only crowds (once infamously featuring the arrest of an unruly patron who couldn’t get in). Occasionally guests drop in (the incomparable Richard Taylor last year) to say hello to fans. We promise to deliver the latest Hobbit movie info and perhaps peek behind the curtain of the potential of the Ultimate LOTR Box Set. (Unauthorized of course!) Join founder Calisuri and staffers Quickbeam and MrCere as they deliver from the stage while staffers Deej and Garfeimao will be in attendance and lending a hand.

With all the Hobbit news flying around airwaves and websites, TheOneRing.net spoke with Fictional Frontiers about the process of breaking the news that Guillermo del Toro was leaving ‘The Hobbit’ and the possibilities of who might replace him and the state of things in general. TheOneRing.net has been invited and will attend popular culture conventions on both coasts as we present live at the San Diego Comic-Con and Atlanta’s DragonCon. Each convention will feature staff from TORn talking about the very latest news and spy reports on the Hobbit front and any other news tidbits we can get our hands on. We always try to bring guests either live or by video message and have time for fans to ask questions and interact.
Comic-Con: TORn will open the first full day of the convention with a panel featuring founders/staffers Calisuri, Quickbeam and MrCere with Weta expected to have something to say as well. In addition, TORn staffers will likely be found at the Weta booth and at Slave Boy Films‘ booth with unique TORn t-shirts available at each. DragonCon: TORn will spend Labor Day weekend at a fan table provided at one of the hotels of the convention selling shirts, running contests, giving items away and getting a lot of face time with fellow fans. In addition, TORn will present the latest Hobbit news at the show, perhaps as many as three times with staffers Deej, greendragon and MrCere. The convention features a whole weekend of Tolkien programming with lectures, presentations, and guests including Sean Astin. Rumors have hit the interwebs today that there is an now an official greenlight for ‘The Hobbit’ which we have learned is not true and further have learned that that 3D is a bit unlikely at this point. A greenlight would mean that Warner Bros. either with MGM or despite MGM and its uncertain future, have approved a budget and put the movie-making machine in motion. We checked with our global spy network and our own Xoanon heard back from sources in New Zealand that this is not true. So fans, calm those heart palpitations. Update #1: Another rock-solid trusted source has checked in with duplicate info so if there were any doubts, obliterate them. No lights are green*.
On the side of good news, a completely different source (yes, a third) confirmed that word is out to those involved with the production to prepare for a potential November start date. So while there isn’t officially a ‘go’ on the pair of films to be directed by Guillermo del Toro and produced by Peter Jackson, the film industries in Hollywood and Wellington are still keeping that target in mind. That, as Kiwis can tell you, turns out to be just about the right time to shoot on Hobbiton. And, if it wasn’t clear already, the moment, yea, the instant we hear official word has been given, we will post it here. *Update #2: There is nothing definitive but a highly placed source also tells us today (thanks to the ‘green’ ruckus) that 3D looks less likely at this point. Reading between the lines, 3D would add to both budget and schedule and the parties involved don’t want to sacrifice story or shooting time just to have 3D flicks.

From whatsplaying.com Speaking to Melbourne’s Play yesterday, Sir Ian McKellen – currently appearing in an Australian production of Waiting for Godot at the Comedy Theatre – says he had expected to start work on the first of the two Hobbit movies a few weeks ago. “That should have started in April but they didn’t contact me about a contract until a few weeks ago and we’re in negotiation”, the actor, who’d be reprising his Lord of the Rings‘ role Gandalf for the film, said. “I shall see (director) Guillermo del Toro and (executive producer) Peter Jackson when I’m in New Zealand after we’ve been to Australia and well find out more then.” More..

The Wall Street Journal reports today that the Imax Corporation has signed a deal with studio Warner Brothers to release up to 20 films through 2013.
Among the 15 films whose release dates are pending confirmation are Dark Shadows, Superman, and Batman 3.
The remaining 5 films that have been “locked” are the last two installments of the Harry Potter franchise: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (in 3D), Happy Feet 2, and The Hobbit in December 2013.
The snippet of the article gives no indication about whether the December 2013 release time frame pertains to the first or the second Hobbit film, nor whether the films will be in 3D. Only subscribers to the Wall Street Journal have access to the entire article, so anyone with the ability to do so is welcome to send in any details concerning The Hobbit films that might be in there to spymaster@theonering.net.
UPDATE: We’ve just received word that news about the 2013 release is WRONG, sorta. The FIRST Hobbit film is still set for 2012, and the second is set for 2013.
This was reported incorrectly on an IMAX press release and was picked up across the interweb.
No fear! The Hobbit 1 is set for 2012!
