…the most loathly shape that he had ever beheld…Most like a spider she was, but huger than the great hunting beasts…Great horns she had, and behind her short stalk-like neck was her huge swollen body, a vast bloated bag, swaying and sagging between her legs; its great bulk was black, blotched with livid marks, but the belly underneath was pale and luminous and gave forth a stench. Her legs were bent, with great knobbed joints high above her back, and hairs that stuck out like steel spines, and at each leg’s end there was a claw…

Shelob.

For every Tolkien fan, the name leaps from the pages (and screen) of Middle-earth to invade a commonly held fear in our everyday life – the fear of an impossibly large, eight-legged, creepy-crawly finding us in the dark. *shiver* According to Wikipedia, it is estimated that 55% of women and 18% of men are Arachnophobic. You can count me among those with a mild fear of spiders, which basically means I have to ‘act’ the role of father/husband when it comes disposing of them. I can’t very well unleash a high-pitched scream and run away now can I…

So when I first saw the ‘Shelob Attacks’ LEGO® Set at the 2012 Toy Fare, I have to admit…I was a bit creeped out. Yes, its LEGO® blocks, but the piece is still surprisingly life-like. In fact, one of the reporters getting the sneak peek at this set could not go within 5 feet of the display. Yes, he was that Arachnophobic!

Before we get to the meat of this review, I will warn you ahead of time, that I am in no way a LEGO® Set expert. To be honest, I haven’t touched the popular construction toys for possibly 10 years, so I’m a bit behind the times when it comes to the licensed themed sets. However, I can tell you, within 1 minute of opening the box, the wonderful memories of LEGO® set building came swooping back.

Film and celebrity media flock to Park City, Utah for the Sundance Film Festival so the Peter Jackson-produced West Memphis Three is grabbing a lot of media attention. Staffer Maegwen sends in two clips from E! with video of director Amy Berg, Jackson and Damien Echols, one of the West Memphis Three. They slip in some Hobbit content too. You can view it if you click here.
The next video has some Hobbit content from the first link but starts with Elijah Wood saying that returning to New Zealand was like a family reunion in a Hobbity context. You can view that one here, with extra Sundance content after Middle-earth chat is over.

Elijah Wood At the Sundance Film Festival because of his role in the film Celeste and Jess Forever, Elijah Wood spoke briefly about his participation in The Hobbit.

“Did my part already…” Wood said. “I was there for a month. It didn’t actually take that much time for the work. It was sort of half vacation and catching up with old friends and half work.”

“It had been 11 years since I’d been to Hobbiton,” Wood said. “I turned 19 in Hobbiton. That’s [expletive] crazy. I stood on the hill looking at the hobbit holes and I was, like, ‘I turned 19 here and I’m 30 now.’ It was such a weird thing. And a lot of the same crew were there. That was the most bizarre. It felt like taking a step back in time almost. It was extraordinary.”

Elijah WoodSteve Rose from guardian.co.uk writes: Since Lord of the Rings, the actor has avoided big-budget epics. But now he’s reprising his hobbit role and starring in a lavish Treasure Island adaptation. Is that the Ring? Around the ring finger of Elijah Wood’s right hand is a band of silver with strange lettering on it – probably Elvish. As a reward for his lead hobbiting services in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jackson reportedly gave Wood the original Ring. And he still wears it. Doesn’t he?

“No. This is Hebrew, ” he says, twirling the ring around his finger. “I know, it has a kind of a similar look to it.”

Oh.

“I do have the Ring, but it’s not inscribed, and it’s gold. But I don’t think it’s real gold – gold-plated. But, no, I don’t wear it. I keep it in a little box.” Not on a chain around his neck? “I carried it for a long time,” he says with mock solemnity. More..

Elijah Wood has confirmed that the first trailer for The Hobbit will debut in front of The Adventures of Tintin in the US. The Happy Feet Two star, who will reprise his role as Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings prequels, admitted that he hasn’t yet seen the teaser footage.

“I have not seen it. I have spoken to people about the trailer, I have a sense of what’s going to be in it, he told Digital Spy. “I think it’s going to be in front of Tintin when it’s released in the States.” The Adventures of Tintin, which is produced by The Hobbit’s Peter Jackson, will open in US cinemas on December 21. Elijah Wood was on The Graham Norton Show to promote ‘Happy Feet 2’ when the discussion turned to Oscar. Much to our surprise and enjoyment, Wood mentioned TORN’s Oscar Parties, and even mentions us on TV! Catch the clip above, and thanks Elwood! (We’re cool now, so we can call him Elwood).
