Starr Keshet writes: I once knew this really cool geek girl who adamantly refused to watch Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. She also repeatedly turned up her nose at Ralph Bakshi’s animated version of the hallowed classic. Her reasoning? Both Jackson and Bakshi strayed from the official Lord of the Rings canon. In her mind, the LOTR text was literally Holy Gospel, written by the Apostle J.R.R. Tolkien. On geek girls and Lord of the RingsAs such, so-called “loose” interpretations of the Book and sweeping omissions were utterly intolerable. For example, those familiar with Tolkien’s greatest work know both Bakshi and Jackson declined to include Tom Bombadil (aka Iarwain Ben-adar) in their respective films. More..

There it is, right near the top of the newly released Comic-Con Thursday programming schedule: “10:00-11:00 TheOneRing.net: Hobbit Talk”.
That means Comic-Con is having TORn back to talk Hobbit with fans and media at one of the biggest and best popular culture celebrations in the world. Our own staffers Quickbeam and MrCere will take the stage to deliver multimedia images and words, rumors and truths and maybe even deliver a secret or two. Garfeimao and other TORn staff will be distributing some select items to the always supportive fans. Other staffers, like the mysterious Calisuri collaborate on the presentation to make it as full of information and fun as possible. Our team will also be reporting on everything Middle-earth related that we can dig up at the event that starts with preview night on July 20 and runs through the weekend.
As always TheOneRing.net is not-for-profit (nobody gets paid) and in fact, the site supports literacy charities, so look very soon for a t-shirt remnant sale to help cover our expenses for this big show.
The Thursday start time means, from past experience, that as soon as convention doors open, attendees will find the way to room 7AB in the upstairs of the conventional hall to line up for the always capacity crowds that leave many standing in the hall waiting to get in. WETA founder Richard Taylor and Daniel Falconer judge the costumed finalists live. The surprised winner gets an all expenses paid trip to the set of the Hobbit in New Zealand!
Thanks to all the people who have written in letting us know about this, check it out. from mocpages.com: Welcome everyone to the MOCpages collaborative build that was displayed at BrickWorld 2011 in Wheeling Illinois. While mine is not the only post focusing on the collaborative what I’m going to try to do is give a little background and insite into what brought each build to the table… so to speak.
The concept was born at BrickWorld 2010. Kelso and I were talking and we thought “hey, wouldn’t it be fun to do a collaborative?” Sure it would. So after a little thought (and some other concepts that will remain nameless as they may be future projects) I said to him “Hey, I got it… let’s do Lord of the Rings.” He says to me “You mean like… a few of us build Minas Tirith or Barad Dur?” “No, no, no…” I replied “Let’s do Middle Earth… ALL of it.” More..
Circa writes: See this piece of contemporary art (Epic Journey, 2010, video installation 11 hours) by Canadian artist Kevin Schmidt which uses the LOTR EE as two boats tied together travel along the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada. Really cool. More..
Well folks…the journey is complete. Last night, the final film in the trilogy screened in the US and NZ. Now we are left with our brand-new, excessively high-quality Blu-Ray sets to satisfy our LOTR needs. But before we leave the trilogy screenings in the dust, let’s take a moment to thank Warner Bros. and Fathom Events for making these screenings available to the US market. Wouldn’t it be great if they did this once every few years? And if they could arrange for international viewings as well? We’ll work that angle and report back! Just like with the extended editions of FOTR and TTT, we are looking for your reactions to seeing The Return of the King Extended Edition on the big screen. Please feel free to send those reports to spymaster@theonering.net and make sure to include your theater name and location. Below are the first few that have trickled in this morning.
