DragonCon, one of the best fantasy and science fiction events in the world, concluded Monday in Atlanta, Georgia and while concluded, it will not be forgotten.
The convention, that gathers fans from the far reaches of the globe, is likely the last one before filming begins on Guillermo del Toro’s “The Hobbit,” and discussion and anticipation for the forthcoming pair of films adapting J.R.R. Elijah Wood visited The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien to promote his new film ‘9’ and spoke a bit about Comic-Con, the ‘Hobbits,’ Yo Gabba Gabba, being mistaken with Harry Potter and more! (Thanks to Ringer Lossefalme for the heads up. A note to parents, some of the advertising on Hulu.com is a bit post-10pm programming, if you know what we mean!)
ATLANTA – Enthusiasm is building for the two-movie adaptation of “The Hobbit” and if you don’t mind me saying, it can be felt in the air and smelt in the water. One of the first attractions of the day (after Spock and Kirk of course) was TORn’s own trio of staffers Deej, Greendragon ad MrCere, dishing about all the recent developments on “The Hobbit.”
Using quotes from TORn’s own interviews, TORn’s message boards (Guillermo del Toro) and national media, the trio tried to get everybody up to date on the soon-to-be greenlit (we hope/think) film. TORn staffer Garfeimeo wrote in to let us know the date for the LA area Baggins Birthday Bash has changed from Sunday, September 20 to Saturday, September 26. All the other details remain the same: Southern California Tolkien fans are invited to join in the merriment of TORN’s Annual Baggins Birhday Bash, which will take place on Saturday Sept 26 starting at noon in Griffith Park near the Merry-Go-Round. Costumes are encouraged, and prizes will be bestowed upon the most beautifully or most creatively attired lads and ladies. There will also be fun and games, as usual, and maybe even the traditional impersonation contest (if partygoers are up to it). There will be lots of wonderful prizes to be won. The picnic is potluck so bring something to share. RSVP to Garfeimao@theonering.net. Please let me know what you plan to bring so I can make sure we’ve got all bases covered for a good, Hobbity meal.
Friday is the official kick-off to the annual sci-fi and fantasy fest known as DragonCon in Atlanta and as it has for the last decade, TheOneRing.net will be there to celebrate everything Tolkien and bring you the goings-on to the best of our ability. We will have new Lake Town Archery Club shirts as well as the continuation of the themed shirts introduced at Comic-Con this year. TORn also has a panel about the very latest news on “The Hobbit,” on Friday morning and Sunday. As fast as news is changing, they may even be completely different.
The latest DCon news is Brad Dourif(television and film legend and of course Grima Wormtongue) has just been announced as a late addition-guest to the four-day convention. duncan writes: I was able to attend the speech Sean Astin gave at UGA in Athens yesterday. We were in a grand hall with about 2000 people. They showed us a short video of all the movies he has done but of course everyone only cheered for ‘The Goonies’, ‘Rudy’, ’24’, ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Everyone laughed at ‘Encino Man’.
