Today is the annual Tolkien Reading Day where fans from around the world celebrate J.R.R. Tolkien and his works by simply reading. Some schools around the globe participate as do bookstores and coffee shops but many more take part in their own way, by themselves or with friends and family. How did you celebrate? It is also an excellent time to check our our own Reading Room including this post. If you didn’t have a chance to read Tolkien today, its not too late in many time zones (and we promise not to tell if you do it a day late.)

Frandalf writes: In a hole….no, once upon a time in a remote corner of Europe there was a Tolkien Society. Quite an old one too… We are talking about the Tolkien Society Unquendor in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1981, which means that this year we’ll be celebrating our sixth lustrum. Needless to say this must be done in style, as we did with the previous lustra. Yes, it’s partytime again in the Lowlands!

To celebrate the beginning of filming of The Hobbit, White Tree Press (www.whitetreepress.com) is giving away five copies of our fan appreciation anthology, Lembas for the Soul: How The Lord of the Rings Enriches Everyday Life. It’s been an amazing five years since Lembas for the Soul was published. We’re anticipating more joy and wonder now that filming of The Hobbit finally is under way.

Troika writes: Just a heads up that the St.Louis Symphony Orchestra will be performing the score to Fellowship of the Ring live to the film this coming April 1st, 2nd & 3rd. The very exciting news is that numerous original props from the Trilogy (over 30 items, from Frodo’s sword Sting to a complete Ringwraith costume, pretty much stuff from every major character) will be on display as well.
I’ve been collecting original props from the films since 2002 and as far as I know, this is the only collection of it’s kind outside of the Wingnut/Weta Archive. This will be the first, and most likely only time the collection will be on display. More information on the show and tickets can be found here.
03.22.2011– Middle-earth Network is getting ready to launch Dunedain Radio, Friday, March 25th at 8:00 PM CST. Fans of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and the Fantasy genre in general are invited to a special launch party the evening of “Tolkien Reading Day!” Says primary founder Mark Ostley,
