Tyellas writes: The potter who did extensive work for the Lord of the Rings films, Mirek Smíšek, is currently having a gallery show in Waikanae, about 1/2 hour north of Wellington. This show reviews 60 years of his exceptionally graceful work, and shows us why he was chosen as the potter for Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth. Smíšek’s studio, which he shares with his partner Pamela Annsouth, who produces her own gorgeous works, can be visited by appointment, as noted here. More..

Jazmine writes: Picture the setting. Rolling green hills, blossom-shrouded trees, winding lanes, daffodils dancing merrily all around. Where might this scene be unfolding? The Shire perhaps? Almost. The Cotswolds, England, in the heart of Tolkien’s Shire, the land that inspired the creation of the hobbity homeland we have all come to know and love.
This is the setting for an annual Tolkien event that is not to be missed. At the marvellous Redesdale Hall, in the pretty village of Moreton-in-Marsh, arrives Lands of Enchantment, the 2009 Tolkien inspired Art Exhibition. Here you will find original artwork on display from the likes of Tolkien veteran Ted Nasmith, and the wonderful variety provided by the works of Ruth Lacon, Jef Murray and Peter Pracownik. John Howe writes: The steps of most pilgrims are directed to holy places – physical journey coupled with metaphysical journey – or to places linked in some way to family – following old routes and digging up old roots. Our steps tend to lead us to see pictures.
In early March this year, as we were planning to attend the opening of the SWISS DESIGN IN HOLLYWOOD exhibition in Valencia – packing up paintings, checking customs forms and insurance values – something was nagging in the back of my mind. I’ve learned to pay attention to those little alerts, faint as they are, and suddenly a name came to mind: José Segrelles. More…

During our exclusive coverage of Peter Jackson’s King Kong we got to know talented artist Joe Devito. Joe’s eternal devotion to all things Kong are evident in the books and art he continues to publish. He recently sent me some information about an exhibit that will be hosting his work, alongside the work of his brother, Vito Devito.

Kirsten sends this along: We thought you and other ringers might want to know about an art exhibit we have coming up with Jeremy Bennett (Visual Director on LOTR and King Kong). It opens on Friday October 10th 6-9pm (Jeremy will be at the opening!) here in Seattle. He will be exhibiting seven new paintings based off the work he did on Mordor. The exhibit will be at the Roq La Rue Gallery (2312 2nd Ave Seattle WA 98121), visit www.roqlarue.com for more info or call (206)374-8977. Here is his art statement:
“For me conceptualizing shots in Mordor was a double edged sword, it was at an intense time in the production schedule and there was no room for error. It was fairly stressful to say the least but It seemed that for every problem that needed solving, wonderfully creative solutions were being offered up by all involved…” Continue reading “LOTR/Kong Visual Director Art Show in Seattle”
