TORn friend and The Hobbit co-writer Guillermo del Toro has written a forward to a new book just released with the works of Arthur Machen from Wales. He was a journalist, tutor and later found literary success with his best known story “The Great God Pan.”
That story isn’t part of this collection from Penguin Classics called, The White People and Other Weird Stories, said by del Toro to be a crucial step forth in the further canonization of one of the best weird fantasy writer ever. Those who enjoy GDT’s works and influences will want to check this out. Machen is also credited with influencing Peter Straub, Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell and Karl Edward Wagner. His stories, many of them now over a century old, cross boundaries of early horror, supernatural and fantasy fiction.

Access Hollywood recently spoke to Evangeline Lilly, and touched on her role as the woodland elf Tauriel in the current production of The Hobbit. Revealingly, she provided a couple of lines of elvish (presumably Sindarin, but I’m no Tolkien language scholar) — which finally give us some tantalising clues about where the Tauriel character slots into Tolkien’s story.
She also indicated she was being extensively coached in English Received Pronunciation — same as the elves of Rivendell in Lord of the Rings. “I have a dialect coach, I have a motion coach, I have a language coach,” she said. “So I should, by rights, be great in this film!
Check out the clip at CraveOnline, and then give us your thoughts on what it all might mean on our forums or on our live chat!

During the month of October Sideshow Collectibles holds its awesome Spooktacular Event. Now, while this would tend to make folks think Halloween, Vampires, Zombies, and not something from Middle-earth. However, the next character to get the maquette treatment in the The Lord of the Rings maquette line does, I would say, meet the requirements to be announced during Spooktacular. We have seen a quick glimpse of the maquette in a statue video Sideshow had out a while back. In that video the Ringwraith was holding the Witch-king of Angmar sword so that right there could be your exclusive item while the regular would just be a standard maquette. As soon as this new maquette is fully shown hopefully during Spooktacular we will have the images and information for you. Stay tuned! [Spooktacular]
