In the audio interview, Stephen speaks of his role, Martin Freeman’s schedule, and other various topics. That’s the big question posed by Ben Child of The Guardian!
To begin with, fans have long known that Peter Jackson’s vision for his two-part adaptation of The Hobbit involves plans to include the activities of the White Council and the Necromancer of Dol Guldur, a rather sketchy storyline that minimally involves Gandalf, Saruman, and Galadriel, and occurs parallel to the main story of Bilbo’s journey with the thirteen Dwarves to the Lonely Mountain.
But while it could be argued that the White Council storyline is at least canon, what can be said about the surprising inclusion of Frodo, his father Drogo, an older Bilbo (played by Sir Ian Holm), and Legolas?
In his article Ben poses genuine questions that most fans (on TheOneRing.net at least) have been pondering over for months now:
What shape will Sauron take – Tolkien offers no clues – as he will presumably not yet have assumed the form of a great eye in which he appears in Lord of the Rings?
Does this mean that the 89-year-old Christopher Lee has made the trip to New Zealand after all to reprise his role as Saruman?
Going further than questioning the practicalities of filming this prelude to the Lord of the Rings, the article delves deeper into the question at the heart of the much-anticipated cinematic phenomenon – by pulling us away from the central story, will the films present The Hobbit through a very different prism than what was originally intended?

Now that we know the official release dates for the two The Hobbit films, it was only a matter of time for other studios to start adjusting their schedules. First up, according to the HollywoodNews.com, is Ang Lee’s anticipated adaptation of Yann Martel’s ‘Life of Pi,’ which has pushed its release back a week to December 21st 2012. The Hobbit films, whether critically acclaimed or not, will ultimately rule the first two weekends at the box office. It is probably a very good strategy to avoid competition! Remember how Star Trek: Nemesis opened very close to The Two Towers in 2002? That was the death knell for Trekkies worldwide until the reboot a few years ago. The Washington Post has posted a series of photos from the Tolkien reenactment that takes place every spring in Doksy, Czech Republic. There are some amazing costumes and battles showcased, but we do have to point out one small detail. We don’t think the warrior with the bikini briefs was a core character in Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Snowblind Studios reveal a sneak peek at their E3 offerings, with an onslaught of assets for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. As our heroes’ travels lead to E3, the Fellowship of three expands to include a new member – heroes will rise.
The great eagles have traveled with the Fellowship before, lending their keen eye and stamina in support of the three, the human, elf and dwarf. As the party arrives at the ruins of Fornost, Beleram, the noblest of these creatures, breaks from chains to join the Fellowship, becoming its fourth member. Destroying structures, providing an aerial advantage, and employing his instinctual combat prowess to tear apart those who threaten the fellowship, Beleram accompanies our heroes in their campaign to overthrow Agandaur, Sauron’s Chief Lieutenant in the North.
