Top Tolkien Stories of 2007

2007 has been quite an exciting year for Tolkien fans! There’s been an abundance of news and events from across the globe including openings of musicals, new book releases and new movies in the pipeline: something to satisfy just about any geeky preference! As a thank-you for following all the developments of the year with us, we thought we’d put together a retrospective of the top Tolkien stories of 2007 in one convenient list. Mortensen oozes intensity

Viggo Mortensen pauses a lot when speaking. It’s not that he doesn’t know what to say in answer to a question, it’s that he wants to convey exactly what he means, so he takes the time to choose his words carefully. When asked whether he was worried about comparisons between his work in “Eastern Promises,” which was released on DVD Tuesday, and his role in “A History of Violence” (also made with director David Cronenberg) he says the major difference between his two characters is that in “Eastern Promises,” “my character is quite clear on who he is and what he is attempting to do, what he is sacrificing, what’s at stake. Britain announces New Year’s honors list

LONDON – Sir Ian McKellen — Gandalf to “Lord of the Rings” fans — rose further in status Saturday as he joined the elite circle of Britain’s Companions of Honor. Kylie Minogue rivaled McKellen for attention as Britain announced Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year’s Honors list. The Australian pop diva was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE. Well, as expected, this week they have started taking pre-orders for the exclusive edition of this figure. Weta partnership for special effects guru

Weta partnership for special effects guru Oscar-winning special effects guru Joe Letteri has been made a partner at Weta Digital. Letteri, an American, joins Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk as an equal partner and shareholder in the internationally successful Wellington company. He has been a senior visual effects supervisor for Weta Digital, which provides computer-generated effects, since 2001, and will continue in that role. Before that, he worked at George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic for 10 years, and he was a visual effects co-supervisor for the 1997 Star Wars Special Edition. He has played a key role in attracting productions to New Zealand, including James Cameron’s new film Avatar, for which Weta is providing the visual effects. McKellen records Wordsworth verse

McKellen records Wordsworth verse Lord of The Rings actor Sir Ian McKellen has recorded a selection of passages from one of Wordsworth’s best-known works for a Cumbria charity. The Shakespearean actor – best known for playing Gandalf in the Tolkien film trilogy – recorded sections of The Prelude for the Wordsworth Trust.
