Lot # 706 is a limited edition The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring print signed by Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor, and Alan Lee and “two pieces of fantasy horror art”. The King Kong of the New Zealand film industry Peter Jackson caused more of a scene than the mid-air dogfighting when he turned up to the Classic Fighters Omaka 2009 Airshow in Marlborough, New Zealand, this weekend. The Lord of the Rings director is a World War One aircraft collector and some of his collection is included in the three-day show.

Never mind the global recession – filmmaker Peter Jackson is believed to be taking to the skies with a new, $106 million jet. Aircraft industry insiders are abuzz with speculation about the Oscar winner’s upgrade to a Gulfstream G550 jet, one of two exclusive private jets sold to New Zealanders in the past 18 months. How do Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, the two titans of pop culture, collaborate on the new 3-D motion-capture version of Tintin? With lots of high-tech wizardry. Spielberg, who’s directing the first instalment, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, recently wrapped 32 days of performance-capture shooting in Los Angeles. Producer Jackson travelled from his New Zealand home base to Los Angeles for rehearsals and the first week of shooting, and then appeared via an elaborate video-conferencing set-up for the rest of the shoot, using a specially designed iChat-type system in which the Kiwi filmmaker can see everything on the set in real time and simultaneously talk with Spielberg. As any of you avid Peter Jackson fans out there will know, Peter’s had his eye on a newcomer called Neill Blomkamp for a couple of years now – to the point where he was once the frontrunner to helm the promised Halo movie. What has he directed before, you ask? Well, nothing actually – at least not on the full-length feature film front.
