The Paley Center for Media Presents in association with New York Comic Con: Shore on the Score: The Music of Lord of the Rings: Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 6:30 pm. In anticipation of composer Howard Shore’s live performances of the full score of The Fellowship of the Ring at Radio City Music Hall on October 9 and 10, Shore will stop by the Paley Center to share his insights into his craft, and the creative challenges posed by the Lord of the Rings. In Person: Kurt Loder, moderator; Doug Adams , author, The Music of the Lord of the Ring Films; Billy Boyd, Peregrin “Pippin” Took; and Howard Shore, composer/conductor, The Lord of the Rings films. On Oct. 9 and 10, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring hits Radio City Music Hall in a multimedia extravaganza. Howard Shore’s Oscar-winning score will be performed synchronized with the hit film, showcased on a 60-foot screen. Conductor Ludwig Wicki will oversee 300 musicians that include the 21st Century Orchestra, which specializes in film music, The Collegiate Chorale, renowned soprano Kaitlyn Lusk and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. The epic-sized event neatly dovetails with this fall’s release of Music of The Lord of the Rings Films, a book by musicologist Doug Adams. More..

LOTR artist Alan Lee will be appearing at the Weta Cave in Wellington to sign advance copies of his new book, a re-telling of tales from Ovid’s Metamorphoses by brilliant British poet Adrian Mitchell. His appearance on Sat October 3, like John Howe’s recent booksigning there, is reassuring in terms of Hobbit news as it confirms that both LOTR film artists are spending time in Wellington as production ramps up for the films.
Oscar-winning Kiwi screenwriter Philippa Boyens has revealed that she introduced The Lovely Bones to Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, but she did not believe the novel could be turned into a film. It was only after Walsh and Jackson had read the book and both believed it could be a film that Boyens, who co-wrote The Lord of the Rings and King Kong with the couple, changed her mind. Boyens discussed details about The Lovely Bones and The Hobbit, the script for which she is also co-writing, at a writers talk at Te Papa yesterday just hours before she was to watch a final cut of the film, to be released in December.
