This image was slipped under our door deep in our network of mines where TheOneRing.net staff labors to make the internet safe and interesting for Tolkienites. Unable to find the sneaky culprit, we have no choice but to share with the world this exclusive look at page 22-23 from Weta Workshop’s new book, “Smaug: Unleashing The Dragon.”

As you might expect, the book brings readers face-to-face with the magnificent creature created for Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” From the pages we can preview, this is a book with concept art and text from the artists at Weta Digital and Weta Workshop; This spread from Gus Hunter who presents a couple of variations of body types of Old Smaugy. TORn friend Daniel Falconer is the author as he has been on Weta’s previous books about the creation of the Hobbit films.

Hobbit fans won’t want to miss the upcoming spring issue of quarterly film magazine Cinefex. Due out in mid-March, Cinefex 137 will feature a 25-page story on the making of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, based on in-depth interviews with key effects artists who worked on the film, and accompanied by 25 behind-the-scenes photos and frame clips — many of them exclusive.

IMG_7140 01Many fans will know this guy as ‘Skully the Orc’! Fans got their first look at Skully, (real name, apparently, ‘Guritz’), during The Return of the King back in December of 2003, and eleven years later we’re finally getting a chance to add a figure of this character to our collections. Skully joins a quickly growing list of characters from Asmus Toys in their expanding collection of characters from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. As with the other figures in this line, he has 36 points of articulation, various fabrics making up the outfit, a spot-on likeness to the character, and a very cool Orc Flag. You can place your pre-orders for Skully right now from various online retailers, like our friends at Alter Ego Comics for only $137.99.

KiliAs you may recall, we teamed up with Gentle Giant to pick the next Dwarf who would get turned into a bust for their The Hobbit Trilogy line. The winner of the poll was one of the ‘Hot Dwarves’: Kili the Dwarf. Kili is the archer of the company, but this piece gives us him holding his Dwarven sword, which is a nice change for fans with more than one collectible of this character. Kili comes in with a price tag of $75 for non PGM members and only $67.50 for those of us who are PGM members. You can expect Kili to arrive into your collection around the fourth quarter of this year.

Continuing on from our post earlier today about the Home Video release of the Theatrical Edition of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, here’s some further information we’ve gathered about different versions which will be available around the world.

In the UK, where the release happens on April 7th (one day earlier than anywhere else!) it looks like there will be the same editions available as will be in the US – namely Blu-ray 3D combo pack (£18.00), Blu-ray combo pack (£16.50) and DVD (£14.50).  It seems likely there will also be a Collector’s Edition in the UK – most likely those same Noble Collection Dwarven bookends – but we don’t have exact details on that yet.
