A Wellywood sign to celebrate the capital’s film industry will be built along the hillside next to the Miramar Cutting. The Hollywood-style sign will be 3.5 metres high and 28m wide. It is understood to cost several hundred thousand dollars and is intended to be ready for the Rugby World Cup in September. Veteran Wellington film director Geoff Murphy could barely stop laughing when told yesterday that the idea would proceed. More..

Sean Bean, a favorite of LOTR fans worldwide, is anchoring HBO’s fantasy series “A Game of Thrones.” Bean plays Eddard Stark in the adult-themed series, and last week he ran into a bit of difficulty. Fans have consistently given us feedback that they love these clips and HBO has sent along another pair for your viewing enjoyment. We don’t want to get too spoiler-heavy so we will let the clips mostly speak for themselves. It is worth noting that Conan Stevens, a 7-foot-tall stunt actor playing Gregor Clegane or The Mountain That Rides (poor horse!) in “A Game of Thrones,” was just announced as the giant Orc Azog yesterday He appears in neither clip.
In the second clip, another Stark, Eddard’s daughter Arya, speaks with her swordmaster:
Matamata is set for a makeover fit for a Hobbit before the cast and crew arrive for filming of the movies. Matamata Public Relations Association manager Sue Whiting says the organisation will be upgrading facilities to create a ‘Hobbit-like feel’ before the cast and crew arrive. Whiting told the Waikato Times she believed the Welcome to Hobbiton sign is the most photographed in the country, and sculptures of Lord of the Ring characters had drawn hundreds of people, so it is important to maintain them. “At the end of the day, it is all about bringing people to Matamata and creating a reason to visit,” she told the newspaper. All right ringers, I told you a couple weeks ago, when profiling Weta Workshop, that the most impressive environment was going to be justaround the corner. Well, we’ve rounded the corner, and Rivendell is ready to be pre-ordered. If there was ever a must have environment this would be it!

Many of the most important characters of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings would take refuge here to rest their weary minds and bodies. Then in 2001 Sir Peter Jackson and the amazing crew at Weta brought this critical place in Middle Earth to life. Follow the break for more images and details! BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hungary’s disaster management agency is testing the country’s emergency broadcast system with warnings of severe storms in Middle-earth, the fictional setting of J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.”
Messages broadcast Wednesday mostly on state radio and television are warning Hungarians about floods and catastrophic weather in Gondor, Rohan, Rivendell, Helm’s Deep and other locations inhabited by Hobbits, Orcs, Elves, Ents and Dwarves.
Officials say they chose Tolkien’s fantasy world because they don’t want to alarm people by mentioning real locations in the test and want to gauge how effectively the emergency messages reach Hungary’s youth. [Washington Post]
