Over on Wired, Rhett Allain from Southeastern Louisiana University (who has previously analysed the length of the Balrog’s whip) has turned his number-crunching ability to another thorny problem if Middle-earth physics — could the Black Arrow of the movie actually exert enough force to slay Smaug?
(Of course, it does so because it does so … no additional explanation is needed. But I love that Rhett is using it as a starting point to teach folks about maths and physics.) Continue reading “Could the Black Arrow actually kill a dragon?”

You’ve seen these photos before, but not, I think at this sort of resolution. So without further ado, here are five super high-res stills from The Hobbit: the Battle of the Five Armies. I don’t think any of them have been scaled up, but it was WB. Just click the image to get each image in full-resolution.
Really liking the Thranduil one, myself. Thanks to Ringer Bellerophon for the heads-up.

For fans who just can’t wait until the end credits of The Battle of the Five Armies rolls before getting their first listen to Billy Boyd’s “The Last Goodbye”, the entire song is currently streaming on Billboard.com.
Here’s what Billy had to say about the song (excerpted from Billboard):
“We focused on not just the final installment, but moreso on this 10-year epic adventure,” says Boyd. “A song to sum up the six movies. We recorded in Wellington, New Zealand, at one point traveling to Auckland to Neil Finn’s studio — where we recorded some of the guitar. It was surreal to be in his studio, as he did the song for [2012’s] The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
As reported previously, the 2-CD Standard Edition OST releases December 9, 2014, followed by the 2-CD Special Edition OST on December 16, 2014.

Even more TV spots! Thankfully, someone has put them all together in a single four-minute youtube vid for easier watching.
There are six 30-second spots and a single 60-second spot called Defiance. One 30-second spot seems to be missing a name but I can’t work out which it is. Continue reading “Watch all seven TV spots for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”
