From EmpireOnline: The following is both complete conjecture and a possible spoiler for The Hobbit: There And Back Again, so please think carefully before continuing. But when we spoke to Benedict Cumberbatch on set of Sherlock a little while back, we asked him about his roles in Peter Jackson’s new epic, and he said something that may very well be a spoiler, so let’s discuss that just a bit.
Cumberbatch said of his role,
“I’m playing Smaug through motion-capture and voicing the Necromancer, which is a character in the !!SPOILERS!! Highlight to Read Five Legions War or something which I’m meant to understand. He’s not actually in the original Hobbit. It’s something [Peter Jackson]’s taken from Lord Of The Rings that he wants to put in there.”

From the Hollywood Reporter: “Benedict Cumberbatch, who can currently be seen in theaters in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, has nabbed a major role in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek sequel. … Cumberbatch is clearly having a moment. The actor, who stars as Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock, is also on screens with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and is voicing the characters of Smaug the dragon and the Necromancer in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.”

Everyone’s newest favorite hobbit, Martin Freeman, is set to appear on the Graham Norton Show in the UK this Friday and BBC America on Saturday.
Freeman is currently making audiences very happy with his role as Dr. John Watson on BBC One’s “Sherlock.” For all of you “Doctor Who” fans, Karen Gillan will also be a guest — and Noel Gallagher, to round things out. “Sherlock” will return to the US on PBS this spring,

Bret McKenzie, who unofficially played “Figwit” the Elf in The Lord of the Rings, spoke with ComingSoon.net about his role as Lindir in The Hobbit.
“I’ve got a cameo as an elf. Or another cameo. My character is called Lindir. I hang out with Elrond… I’ve got a few lines in Elvish.”
In answer to the question about whether Figwit and Lindir are one and the same, here’s what Bret had to say:
“You’ll probably see, I’ve got slightly different ears. That’s how I differentiate my elf characters. The big difference for this character is that he’s in 3D. He’s a character that’s a lot more three dimensional.”
