Fancy Figwit? Longing for Lindir? Here’s Bret McKenzie’s mix tape, just for you…

The folks over at have posted this great article, where Academy Award winning song writer and Middle-earth actor Bret McKenzie picks his favourite songs-to-seduce-by.  If you ever wondered what an elf would choose for romantic music, now’s your chance to find out.  (Thanks to our friend Ethan Gilsdorf for bringing this to our attention!)

Figwit (Bret McKenzie) wins an Oscar!

A decade ago with Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy was making an impact in popular culture, few would have looked at the cast and extras and picked out New Zealand native Bret McKenize as the guy likely to win an Oscar.

But, at tonight’s Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles the fan favorite and one half of New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk parody duo (Flight of the Conchords) did just that for his song Man or Muppet which is really a question we all must answer for ourselves about ourselves.

McKenzie had a little fun at the microphone making a couple of jokes. He said he was excited to work with Muppets and was intimidated to meet Kermit The Frog.

“But he’s just a normal frog, and like many stars here, he’s a lot shorter in real life.” (Catch video after the break) (more…)

Happy Oscar-day!

It’s Tinseltown’s biggest celebration – the Oscars take place tonight!  And already here at TORn we’re busy planning and getting excited for our party next year!  In honour of today’s awards ceremony, and thinking back to the ‘Return of the One Party’ which TORn held in 2004, here’s a picture of the Oscar Annie Lennox won that night, for Best Original Song, ‘Into the West’.

The statuette was on display last year at London’s Victoria and Albert museum, in their wondeful ‘The House of Annie Lennox’ exhibit.   Let’s hope there’s another Middle-earth winner tonight; Bret McKenzie is up for Best Original Song for ‘Man or Muppet’.  Go Bret!

Enjoy the Oscars tonight!

Bret McKenzie, Oscar nominee

There are already a lot of Oscar winners working on The Hobbit. Soon there might be one more. When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 2011 nominees, Bret McKenzie (“Figwit” in The Lord of the Rings and Lindir in The Hobbit) turned up in the “Music (Original Song)” category for his “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets. Congratulations and good luck to Bret! The Oscars will be awarded on February 26.

By the way, the highest number of nominations went to Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Like The Return of the King, it bagged eleven–also without a single actor nomination. The parallel isn’t complete, since Hugo made it into two categories that ROTK didn’t, Sound Editing and Cinematography. It was not in two categories that ROTK won, Makeup and Original Song.

For a full list of nominees, check out the Academy’s website.

Bret McKenzie Talks About Figwit and Lindir

Bret McKenzie, who unofficially played “Figwit” the Elf in The Lord of the Rings, spoke with about his role as Lindir in The Hobbit.

“I’ve got a cameo as an elf. Or another cameo. My character is called Lindir. I hang out with Elrond… I’ve got a few lines in Elvish.”

In answer to the question about whether Figwit and Lindir are one and the same, here’s what Bret had to say:

“You’ll probably see, I’ve got slightly different ears. That’s how I differentiate my elf characters. The big difference for this character is that he’s in 3D. He’s a character that’s a lot more three dimensional.” promises the full interview will be available soon.

Thanks to Ringer spy Daniel J. for the heads-up.

Figwit says he looks like a hot girl in ‘Hobbit’

Bret McKenzie, half of the New Zealand musical comedy duo, Flight of the Conchords, says his character Lindir in The Hobbit is looking pretty good but doesn’t sing, although he is holding out hope for doing the theme song with Anne Lennox. He told Empire Mazine:

I look much more like a girl in The Hobbit. I look like a hot girl.

The name Figwit of course, is believed to have originated right here at when sharp eyed fans noticed him at the film version of The Council of Elrond and asked, “Frodo Is Great Who Is That?” Whatever the source, the character created such an internet stir that it is rumored to have caused Peter Jackson to give him a line with Arwen in the Return of the King film in a pick-up shot.

McKenzie is his usual entertaining self and you can read the whole article and catch McKenzie in his LOTR glory atEmpire Magazine.

Bret McKenzie Talks The Hobbit

Bret McKenzie is best known for being one part of “New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-rock act”, Flight Of The Conchords. Keen-eyed Lord Of The Rings fans might also know him for his potrayal of the elf Figwit, complete with long sleek black hair – and most worryingly, no beard.

Speaking to Bret about his role as music-wrangler for The Muppets recently, we also talked to him about his return to Middle Earth for The Hobbit and putting on his pointy ears once more.

“It was in Wellington so I could pretty much walk to work. It’s still a small part — I did a couple of days earlier this year — but it was great to get my pointy ears back on. It’s in 3D, so the ears will be extra pointy. You’ll be able to touch the ears.” More..

Ian McKellen Confirms Elrond, Lindir/Figwit Casting

It’s been more than a month since Sir Ian McKellen posted an entry on his blog “Notes From Imladris” dedicated to his adventures filming The Hobbit. But the wait seems to have been worth it.

His latest blog entry “THE HOBBIT, 2 Elves, and another Wizard” is replete with a picture of Hugo Weaving, who’ll be returning as Lord Elrond, a screencap from ROTK of Bret McKenzie as the Elf Lindir, and a picture of  Sylvester McCoy who’s been cast in the role of Radagast the Brown.

Threads of interest follow:

  • Martin Freeman has left The Hobbit. No worries: he’ll be back in Middle Earth after our first hiatus… The rest of the cast remains on duty for another few weeks, working on hobbit-less sections of the film.  These involve dwarves of course but also elves, with Hugo Weaving back for a stretch as Lord Elrond.
  • Another slim-line elf returning from LOTR, is a local: New Zealand’s actor/comedian/singer Bret McKenzie. Now he is briefly back in Rivendell as a senior official at Elrond’s Court and he has a name “Lindir”, which means “singer”.
  • And there’s another wizard in town, preparing to make his appearance as Radagast the Brown, the eccentric friend of Gandalf’s, played by Sylvester McCoy. This week he has been trying out his make-up and costume.

The blog post makes for an amazing read, so be sure to click that link above and read the Grey Wizard’s notes in his own hand.
