According to Borys Kit’s Heat Vision blog with The Hollywood Reporter,  James McAvoy has signed on to play a young Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, in “X-Men: First Class,” which Matthew Vaughn is directing for Fox.  Fox is moving fast on the production, hiring Vaughn in early May and planning a summer start in London. The movie is being planned for a June 3, 2011, release.

McAvoy had been rumoured to be a candidate for the role of Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming Guillermo del Toro epic The Hobbit,  which has yet to be officially green-lighted.  More

Black Books star Bill Bailey wants to play a dwarf in The Hobbit.

Bailey, who is bringing his comedy show Bill Bailey Live to Wellington in June, told The Dominion Post he had auditioned for the part of Gloin the dwarf in The Lord of the Rings prequel.

“I went along for a read-through of The Hobbit. The first read-through was for Gloin,” he said from London.

Bailey, who can be seen in television series Skins and the movie Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, joked that he didn’t need any makeup to be a convincing dwarf. “I saved myself a few quid over here.”  [Full Article]

Nobody has been cast in “The Hobbit,” but there are some clues that despite not being able to hire anybody, plenty of auditions are taking place. The latest example is Caroline Grace-Cassidy for the role of Primula. We aren’t announcing that she has been cast, only that she visited Los Angeles for an audition with “Lord of the Rings” casting director Victoria Burrows back in March. It might be notable that this is beyond “send in a tape” or auditioning in the UK where she is based so it could even be a second audition or an in-person follow up to a previous recorded reading. Fans of The Hobbit know actors such as Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) have at least discussed reprising their Lord Of The Rings roles with Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro or producer Peter Jackson.  While reports suggest other Lord Of The Rings actors may have a role in the upcoming production, it appears one name has not been contacted at all.

In an interview with Bob Strauss of the Los Angeles Daily News, Blanchett  mentioned “she has yet to be approached to reprise Galadriel in the upcoming Hobbit movies”.  Although Galadriel is not mentioned in the story, fans speculate she may yet appear if scenes alluded to in the book (the White Council or an attack on Dol Guldur) are included in the movies.

Could this mean Galadriel has no role in the new movies?  Or simply the “green light” delay related to MGM’s situation would nix even a discussion about the lady of light returning?  TORN fans likely will continue to debate it on the message boards.

Quint over at Aintitcool has a report that Australian Jack Thompson is “up for Thorin in The Hobbit”. The writer labels it a “rumor” so don’t jump to any conclusions and being “up for” a film probably means he has or will have an audition.

The pair of films based on “The Hobbit,” are waiting for a greenlight from the studios because one of the 50 percent owners of the potential revenue (MGM) has its future up in the air. Continue reading “What Thorin might look like”
