Some fans have expressed concern that Peter Jackson melding The Hobbit with Tolkien’s later, weightier work will rob the former of its light spirit. Might it lose its intimate tone?

In the latest issue of SFX (#229, in the shops Wednesday 14 November), Andy Serkis and Philippa Boyens reveal their thoughts on the tone and style that the movie versions will assume. Continue reading “Boyens and Serkis discuss The Hobbit’s tone with SFX”

A while back, we announced that TheOneRing.net would be hosting the ‘Unexpected Art Show’ in Los Angeles. After speaking with all of the parties involved (and even more whom wanted to be involved but couldn’t because of the aggressive timeframe), we’ve decided to move this gathering of creatives to Oscar Party weekend! The ‘Unexpected Art Show’ will now invade Hollywood on Feb 22nd 2013 – allowing the folks attending ‘The One Expected Party’ a chance to partake in this one-of-a-kind show. Further details on the art show will be available shortly. And since we are on the topic of Oscar Party…We are just about to announce many more details! Stay tuned for all the exciting details including a headline act for the ages! (For those you who filled out our survey from last year, we haven’t forgotten you! You will receive an exclusive offer to purchase tickets first!)

Ringer TheHutt stumbled across some very cool behind-the-scenes footage from Bag End that has been converted to animated gifs. They’re labelled under “Denny’s”, which makes me wonder whether they could be some featurettes associated with the Denny’s license. The Bag End Unexpected Party looks like a real knees-up! And Bilbo looks more than a little intimidated by Dwalin especially! Spoiler warning of course! Continue reading “Behind the scenes at Bag End!”

It’s TV spot #3 for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Catch a glimpse of Radagast and his bunnysled, Gollum dropping in on Bilbo, plus Thorin and company arriving at Rivendell! Usual warning for spoilers!

In my opinion, this is the single-coolest thing related to the Hobbit all year. It’s a preview of the track Radagast the Brown from the soundtrack of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Straight up: it’s fantastic.

The lietmotif is a lurching thing of strings and gearlike percussion that could almost be the work of rock auteurs Nick Cave and Warren Ellis and some of Ellis’s work with The Dirty Three. Throughout the piece, this lietmotif repeats several times, one of the variations adding a piercing choir. Gripping stuff, and really puts me in mind of Radagast working in his digs in Rhosgobel. It’s an unbelievable improvement on the bland canned music that was underneath the second trailer (which incidentally was not the work of Shore). Since, as we all know, writing about music is like dancing about architecture, I’ll just stop at this point and say: go listen to it yourself.
