Bilbo Baggins Birthday in LA AreaSouthern California Tolkien fans are invited to join in the merriment of TORN’s Annual Baggins Birhday Bash, which will take place on Sunday Sept 20 starting at noon in Griffith Park near the Merry-Go-Round. Costumes are encouraged, and prizes will be bestowed upon the most beautifully or most creatively attired lads and ladies. There will also be fun and games, as usual, and maybe even the traditional impersonation contest (if partygoers are up to it). There will be lots of wonderful prizes to be won. The picnic is potluck so bring something to share. RSVP to Garfeimao@theonering.net. Please let me know what you plan to bring so I can make sure we’ve got all bases covered for a good, Hobbity meal.

From The Tolkien Society: Oxonmoot 2009, 25th – 27th September, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. A weekend of Talks and Papers, a fiendish quiz, an Art Show, Merry & Pippin’s Dance Workshop, a Dealers’Room, and Enyalië (act of remembrance at Tolkien’s grave). Oxonmoot is the special event of the Tolkien Society year held on a weekend close to Bilbo & Frodo’s birthdays. There is a range of activities such as academic talks & papers, workshops (see the Call for Papers below if you wish to offer something), new, second-hand and rare book dealers, an art show (with professional and amateur works), plus a quiet area where you can drink tea, fill up the corners and chat with old or new friends. Of course there is also a party including a masquerade (costume is optional) and entertainments. It is a great time for making new friends in the Society. On Sunday there is a wreath laying and short act of remembrance, Enyalië, at Tolkien’s grave. Continue reading “Oxonmoot 2009 News”

Gregory Pyne writes: I am pleased to announce the formation of a Ringers fundraising group here in the Orlando area called Hobbit Meals. Hobbit Meals centers itself around a love and passion for all things Lord of the Rings, while at the same time generating money and foods for local food banks and charities. Since we are just getting started, our operation is quite simple. We host Hobbit Meal events where Lord of the Rings fans come to enjoy the movies and a full Hobbit-style spread of food over the course of a day (Hobbits, as written by J.R.R. Tolkien, were known to eat up to six meals a day). Continue reading “Enjoy a ‘Hobbit Meal’ for a Good Cause”

While there were perhaps 20 people around 5PM when the venue opened, by 7PM there were well over 100 people (including some that looked to be from a local news agency). He was slightly delayed because he was giving an interview with a certain website Wink While we waited we bumped into Garfeimao (TORn staffer) it was great to see her again.
