Apologies for the delay in this post; it took longer than expected to wrestle my thoughts into (hopefully!) coherent form! It’s not easy to craft a post – without writing an entire book (and this isn’t far off)! – which captures the essence of all that Viggo Mortensen had to say when he attended the Coolidge Award here in Boston. In this final part of the write-up, I wanted to try to capture Mortensen’s philosophy of life, as revealed through remarks he made during the various gatherings at the Coolidge Theatre. In the three sessions at the Coolidge – press Q&A, questions after the Eastern Promises screening, and the evening discussion with WBUR’s Robin Young – Mortensen was asked many questions, and his thoughtful way of looking at the world, (and at the art he wishes to create in that world), was revealed in the answers he gave.
Mortensen is often referred to as a ‘Renaissance man’, because of his seeming ability to turn his hand to all manner of talents. He has written poetry, exhibited photography and paintings, even composed music. He told the audience at the Coolidge, ‘I might like to try directing at some point.’ He is an excellent horseman and was praised by the late swordmaster Bob Anderson (in the Two Towers DVD extras) as being ‘the best swordsman I’ve ever trained’. On top of all that, he’s a rather good actor…. In spite of all this ability, Mortensen continues to be known as ‘No ego Viggo’; how is it that he stays so humble? And what drives him to try his hand in so many different fields?

On March 25, a date designated worldwide as Tolkien Reading Day, The Grey Havens Group will share our love of Tolkien with the community by hosting a Tolkien Open Mic event from 12:00-4:00 p.m. at Barbed Wire Books, 504 Main Street in Longmont, CO. The family-friendly celebration will feature costumed characters, a costume contest and quizzes with prizes, crafts, a silent auction, light refreshments and, most importantly, an opportunity for folks to share their favorite passages from Tolkien’s works or to perform Tolkien-themed songs. This is the second Tolkien Reading Day event for our group but the first to be open to the public. We hope that the event will become an annual tradition in Longmont. See you there!

Tolkien Forever will hold our annual Reading Day on March 24, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., at the Cat and Fiddle, 6530 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles. Since 2012 marks the 75th year since the publication of “The Hobbit” and will also see the release of Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, it is also not unexpected that the theme of Reading Day 2012 will be “The Hobbit”.

Friend and discussion board member, Jason Fisher (a.k.a. ‘visualweasel’ on the boards), is hosting a workshop on J.R.R. Tolkien and source criticism at the Art Center of Corpus Christi this Saturday, March 3, at 1:00 p.m. His presentation will draw on essays from his recently published book “Tolkien and the Study of His Sources: Critical Essays.” The cost of the workshop is $20. Calling all So Cal Ringers, TheOneRing.net will be presenting a panel at Wondercon in Anaheim later this month. We are slated to kick off the weekend by taking to the podium on Friday, March 16 at 12:30pm in room #207. We’ll be talking all things Hobbit, as well as any other Tolkien related news that pops up this month. Barring any internet connectivity issues, the panel will be streamed live for those unable to attend, and there will be constant streaming from the convention floor all day after the panel as well. If you have followed the history of TheOneRing.net, you know that Oscar season has a special meaning to us and our community. In the early 2000s, we were privileged enough to host three memorable events in Los Angeles: 2002’s ‘The One Party;’ 2003’s ‘Two Towers One Party;’ and 2004’s ‘The Return of the One Party.’ The last party, which corresponded with The Return of the King winning 11 Academy Awards, was such a success the LA Times called it ‘The hottest bash in town’ on Oscar Night. [Video] We are very excited to announce that we will be holding another party on Oscar night 2013 – ‘The One Expected Party.’ Like our previous events, we are making this a fan-centered celebration of all things Middle-earth, but also a celebration of the release of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.’ Even if no nominations are awarded to the first Hobbit film, the party will still take place! The planning and coordination to get the party going has been quite significant and is already in motion, however we would love to get your ideas and insight via the following form. If you have any interest in the party, please take a couple of minutes and submit the form below.
