An anonymous Ringer sends in this heads up about a Hobbit casting call in Tauranga, New Zealand:

The Bay of Plenty Times (Tauranga’s regional newspaper) had an ad in the weekend edition’s classifieds. It was an official casting call for The Hobbit, asking for men under 5’7″ and women under 5’2″, for filming in Matamata in early 2011. They said they will be in Tauranga on Wed 24th Nov between 2 and 4pm at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, cnr Devonport Rd and 11th Ave. Gutted that I’m 5’9″!

If anyone can scan the ad, please send it our way! [Contact TORn] [Map of Location]

After the drama surrounding The Hobbit actors’ dispute, the film and television industry is looking to talk through their problems at an industry hui. The announcement was made at the Screen Production and Development Association (SPADA) conference in Auckland. The Hobbit’s New Zealand production was put in doubt after contract disputes between actors’ unions and the film’s producers. SPADA board member Richard Fletcher said communication was the key to healing the wounds created by the conflict. “We can only move forward if we’re going to talk.” More..

Ostadan writes: Fantasy Flight Games’ new ‘Hobbit’ title by Reiner Knizia is apparently already in stores in Australia (not yet in North America; perhaps shipping from China has something to do with this), and a review has been posted to boardgamegeek:

“The Hobbit is a great little game, perfect for families. It also makes a nice 45 minute super-filler for gamers who want an appetiser before playing something deeper. Components are attractive, the rules are so straightforward that Grandma can be playing in five minutes, and there are plenty of laughs and groans as the dice come out at adventure time. Recommended for families, and gamers who want something light and fun.”

TORn message board member AlexMaglor has pointed us to a great interview (albeit in Spanish) with Martin Freeman over at Spanish website elpais.com. But thanks to the linguistic skills of message board member Empedocles, we’ve now got the entire interview translated in English.

Here’s some snippets from the translated interview:

“I know my work plan” says Freeman. “I start in January, then I’ll have a break in the summer so I can shoot the second season of Sherlock, the BBC show where I portray Watson, and then I’ll be back in New Zealand in September in order to finish the movie by the end of the year”. The Englishman says summer because he’s thinking about the northern hemisphere seasons, but it will be winter in New Zealand.

“I wasn’t a fan of Tolkien before, I am now. A couple of weeks ago, I tried Bilbo’s hairy feet for the first time, and also the ears, although mine are big enough already, and the hair too. Moreover, they made molds out of those parts of my body since I’m going to be using prosthetics for many months. How did I look? Really different… but I’m ready to be Bilbo.”

Head over to our message boards for the translated interview and to read about Freeman’s conversations with Guillermo and PJ during the past couple of months.

Sylvester McCoyBruce Hopkins writes: Here is a link to an interview with Sylvester McCoy from the Armageddon convention in Melbourne in Oct. I was a guest with Sylvester McCoy and sat in on an interview he did with a Dr Who fansite. I was able to record the interview. Sylvester and I caught up during the event as we had spent some time together with Ian McKellen and Jonathon Hyde when they were out in NZ with the Royal Shakespeare Company a couple of years ago. The Hobbit was still being talked about as possibly being shot away from NZ when the interview happened. More..
