Gould Return of the KingsArtist and Ringer fan Grant Gould will have a card featured in the upcoming TOPPS ‘Lord of the Rings: Masterpieces II’ trading cards, arriving in stores early February. Grant’s artwork will be included in the base set and is titled it ‘Return of the Kings.’ (Click on the Thumbnail to be taken to his blog for a full view) Grant says, “I wanted to capture an unseen moment from the movies, and decided to draw Aragorn standing beside the King of the Dead, sailing toward Minas Tirith. It was a lot of fun to create, and a huge honor to officially be part of the LOTR art world, even if in a small way.” Look for this new set from TOPPS in local comic, collectible or gaming shops. The Science ChannelI happened to be flipping through channels over the holiday and ran across a marathon of The Science Channel’s ‘How It’s Made.’ You are probably saying, yea, so what?! Well, this particular episode was on how pinball machines are made and the pinball machine they were making was a The Lord of the Rings one! After further investigation, it looks like you can watch this episode online at the Science Channel website. If you don’t feel like watching it online, it looks like this episode is airing again on Jan 19th. [How It’s Made]

Chad Grischow writes: January 3, 2008 – Poor Howard Shore. With most moviegoers busy ogling over the amazing visual work Weta created for Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy, it is easy to forget just how equally fantastic they each sound. Newly issued five-disc mega set, featuring nearly four hours worth of cd audio and another four hours of DVD audio in full surround sound, is here to refresh your memory. Having worked on scores for Martin Scorsese (The Departed) and David Fincher (Se7en and Panic Room), not to mention his long-standing working relationship with David Cronenberg, Shore knows drama and tension. This experience serves him well in the inevitable battle sequences, but he proves equally capable of pulling off delightfully wistful fare throughout. It is the well balanced, always compelling, sound that makes this rather lengthy collection worthy of your ears from start to finish. Despite just how long it will take you to hear all of Shore’s work, there is not much fat to be found. Like the film itself, there are a few lulls, like plodding “Marshalling At Dunharrow”, but thankfully no repeated false endings or moments where you wish the credits would start rolling already.
